IS FASTING SAFE FOR DIABETICS?

I have been a Type 2 diabetic for 13 years. I'm obese and also have fatty liver. I've recently been reading up a lot on Fasting and how good it is for the body. I have started slowly by doing 2 days a week of skipping breakfast and want to eventually skip breakfast altogether. My DN has advised me against it and wants to put me on Trulicity (weight loss injection) to enable me to lose weight and lower my BS levels. It would be a last resort for me to lose weight as I have literally tried everything. Can anyone please advise?

@Carina1962 your profile says you are insulin dependent.
If you are on fixed insulin doses, fasting would be dangerous. However, if you adjust your insulin dose, it should be possible - I know people with Type 1 who fast for religious reasons.

Sorry I have posted on the wrong place. I am on medication only not insulin. Where would I post this question? I'm a newbie.

You have posted in the right place and when I checked earlier your profile and information showed correctly, tablets not insulin.:)

I think this is a forum gremlin which sometimes incorrectly uses the wrong diabetes type.
The moderators may know how to correct it.

Will refer to techies. We mods don’t have their powers.

Hi @Carina1962 , like @In Response said, this is a very nasty forum gremlin we've tried to get rid of for years, without success.
The stupid thing is, most of us don't see the wrong information on your profile, I see you simply as a T2, where In Response sees the insulin dependent version.

The way to fix this is to click on your profile pic on the top right of your screen and select Personal Details.
There is a drop down menu for Type of diabetes.

It gives two options for type 2, and one of them will show you as type 2, the other one shows you as a type 2 on insulin for some members.
The problem is that I don't know which one is which, so the only way to find out is by trial and error.

Can you please select one of the two? (and remember which one you chose!)

@In Response , would you be so kind to check if it shows the right T2 after Carina has selected one? I can't see the glitch. :banghead:

Is that a typo or have you lost 5 stones 3 lbs (73lbs) in one month? That's a rather large weigh loss in such a short time, which is why I am asking.

Hi @Carina1962

I believe that quite a few T2 members here use various variants of fasting, OMAD (one meal a day) and others. Can I ask what diabetic pills you are on? It may not be suited to some.... Did your nurse say why they didn't want you to fast?

Also what are you/will you be eating in the eating window as that too is highly relevant. It’s possible that changing which foods you eat might also give great results. Low carb/keto often naturally results in fewer meals because we are fuller from more satiating foods. Again there are a few medications you need to be more wary with, though many are fine.

I’ve had great success using a combination of low carb higher fat eating and eating one meal a day… once I dropped the sugar and processed carb foods my appetite stabilised and the fasting became pretty easy . I’m steadily losing weight, my hba1c is in normal limits and I feel so much better. I’m 50f by the way…

Yes fasting is safe for most T2's

However Jardiance is know to cause hypo's in some people so it might be worth speaking to the nurse about reducing your dose or cutting it out altogether before trying. I'm guessing that is why she was against it.

I assume you are regularly testing your blood sugar levels so you will be able to see if and when you are going too low.

I would go as far to say that not only is fasting safe for people with diabetes, it's GOOD for people with diabetes. Certainly the insulin-resistance based kind.

Hi,
Be careful fasting if you are taking Jardiance duo as this can also raise your ketones and send you into DKA.

Kind Regards

Duncan

I would argue that it's safe for most T2 diabetics, but not for some diabetics on certain medications.

I eat every 12 hours or so as that prevents my BG level going up and up between waking and eating.
If I eat early I can then go out all day and not have to think about food, which is another advantage.
My meter showed me that eating breakfast was good, but to limit carbs to 10gm or less for best effect. We all react differently, so it is best to check different options to see what suits you best.
