Weight loss

Hello,

I was diagnosed as diabetic a few months ago. Since June I have lost 10kg following a low carb diet.

My BS levels haven’t actually improved that much (52, 48, 49) but I can’t stop losing weight.

Is this normal? I’m at a weight that I am happy with. I’m eating quite a lot of high fat foods, I’m not hungry and dont really have the appetite to eat more.

Do you think it is worth mentioning this to the doctor? Or is it just a side effect of cutting out the junk from my diet?

Is really appreciate any experience from anyone. Thanks so much in advance!

You've had 3 HbA1c tests since June?
How old are you you might need to ask to get your c-peptide or fasting insulin levels checked.. ?

I'd talk to the doctor about the weight loss and ask for cpeptide and GAD tests just to rule out the possibility of other types of diabetes. (They assume T2 on first diagnosis because 90% of diabetics have it, but unintended weight loss is a slight red flag for other types).

Of course, it could just be that you aren't eating enough. How low carb are you?

Thanks for replying.

Bulkbiker - I did have three hb1ac tests in a short space of time. There were three weeks between the first and second and the third was three months later.

My next one is not for six months though. I’m in my 30s.

EllieM - I’m not terribly low carb - maybe 40-50g per day. I’m eating more calories that I used to but the weight is still coming off.

I have an appointment with the doctors next week so I will mention it then.

Thanks again.

I'd agree with @EllieM more testing required here.

Hi @CDLC Bear in mind that HbA1C is an average over 2 and a half to 3 months, so 3 tests in just a few weeks aren't likely to show much difference.

Say you had HbA1c taken and it was 55 6 weeks ago and 50 now (after 6 weeks on LC). Well then, the implication is that in another 6 weeks (3 months from the first reading) if sticking to the same Low Carb it would have improved by another 5 i.e down to 45 (mid pre-diabetic levels).
Finger-pick Blood Glucose readings 9especially 2hrs after meals) show results of dietary changes much faster than HbA1C does.
