Introduce Yourself: Answer Some Personal Questions

Hi to all.

I‘m new to the forum and wondering if I have diabetes type 2. My readings are all over the place, but I had a reading of just over 12 last week. A few hours later the reading was down to 7.3 and my friend said that was fine, he thought that I couldn’t be diabetic because my blood glucose came down so quickly in just a few hours. Also my readings have been 7 or 8s. My dad also developed diabetes type 2 in his 60s. I have a lot of symptoms. Anyway I’m from the UK and here to educate myself.

Hi all I’m guessing my storey will be typical on here. I’m 54 years old. Been on statins for years now also thyroxine for under active thyroid. My regular blood tests have shown me as pre diabetic for about 5 years now but I’ve hit the magic number this year and I’m on metformin now. 2000 a day.
live changed my diet and trying not to eat between meals.
the nurse told me I don’t need to test my blood as I was stable.

My Name is Ann I am 66 years old and recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
I live in Scotland, married with 2 Adult girls and 2 granddaughters.
I am trying to control my diabetes with diet. On the day I was diagnosed my blood sugar in January was 14.
Since then my average is 8.4-8.6. I am not on any medication. I am still struggling with what I can and cannot eat or drink. I am also just back from holiday and during the holiday most days I was between 9 & 10.1
When eating out, I found that because of the time of year, there was very little choice to eat low carb & low sugar.
Does anyone have any suggestions for the future.
Even going into a cafe for tea or coffee, where you would normally have a piece or cake or a biscuit there seem to be absolutely nothing for diabetics.
Any help would be very appreciated Thank you

Hello, I’m Linda 64 years old retired living the North of England. I have one daughter two grandchildren all thankfully diabetes free so far. I’m new to the forum but diagnosed with Type 1 over 25 years ago which was a bit of a shock no previous family history of diabetes.
I have reasonably good control with an average Alc 8.0% (64 mmol/mol). I’m not on any other medication but struggle to maintain these levels in particular if I’m on holiday or go out for the evening.

Hi, Im Steve, 53 from UK, been T2 for over 10 years now, had it reasonably under control but recently things going a bit downhill so need to sort myself out, did a sponsored run for Cancer Research in February which was hard and finding it hard (always have) to get back on the get fit bus. The results speak for themselves when I do but just cant get motivated. I work from home so mostly only around my wife and son except for weekends when I am out gigging with one of my 2 bands
Just hoping for a little insight in to other peoples diabetic lives and to not feel like I am the only one, and who knows what else along the way

Hi, my name is Sonia, I’m 78 years old and have type 2 diabetes. I live with my partner Rob who is very laid back and works for himself as a studio potter, he’s very skilled and produces some beautiful work as well as running classes.
I’m a retired social work manager, working latterly in fostering and adoption which was very stressful but I loved it for the most part.
I have two children, my son lives in Canada with his wife and my daughter lives about an hour away from me. She has my two grandchildren, my grandson is an artist and my granddaughter is going to drama school in the autumn. They are lovely young people and in very proud of my children and my grandchildren, I feel very blessed to have them in my life.
There were lots of questions quoted which I’m answer but I can’t remember all of them!! I live in the U.K. in Northamptonshire in a very beautiful little village, quintessentialy English!! I love living here, we have a stone built cottage and a small garden which I love.
My favourite bands are zFleetwood Mac, Queen, rock bands, but also ballet is a great favourite if mine as is live theatre, we have some wonderful theatres near us, some outdoors in the summer which is great fun.
We don’t have pets st the moment, we lost our two lovely border collies and our beautiful cat all within 12 months of each other and we just haven’t had the heart to take on more just yet, plus we are getting older and less physically able to meet the needs of dogs in particular.
I enjoy art as a hobby, I go to an art class once a week which I love, I love meeting up with friends, a group of us met at University and have a long standing friendship of many years which is wonderfully uplifting, I don’t know what I’d do without them!!
I’m waiting for a hip replacement operation which is slowing me down a bit at the moment!! Be glad to get that done!! Otherwise I’m quite heathy, I’ll say for my age because obviously with diabetes you have to look after yourself, which I’m not too good at I admit! I don’t smoke and don’t drink very much just an occasional glass of wine. However I’m not good at eating regularly and properly!! I’m hoping to get some tips from this group and some support. So nice to meet you all, I’m looking forward to reading some interesting bios! Also advice, tips, help etc. thanks in advance!

I am Steve.
I am 67
I live in North Shropshire.
You don't want to know about my thought on religion.
We have 2 cats.
I do not use Microsoft or Apple.
I do not follow any sports
I do not have any body decorations.
Music Like Cinema organ music, big bands and classical music.
I do not watch TV
As a former cinema projectionist/engineer I could not make a list of just five films I like.
I am retired after a bad fall 18 years ago.

I spend a lot of my time in my home cinema, I am the wide film restoration engineer for the Projected Picture Trust Halifax West Yorkshire.

HI, I'm Chris (male) and should have introduced myself before posting a long (and boring) info. request post!

I am 59 (I'll say that as long as I can, until I have to say I'm 60 in May) and live in Essex. Deaf as a post (wife says I never hear her say anything).

I'm married with two children who will never leave (both at Uni) and my wife Paula is also a type 2 diabetic. We suffer & compete against each other for low/high blood glucose readings.

Not religious especially, but still pray and take the Lord's name in vain occasionally. Mix of religions in the family means we are hedging our bets.

I have a dog called Daisy, Bichon Frise (13) and she takes more drugs than me. Blind, no teeth, but lives for the moment and the next meal (which come to think of it...)

Kids Apple, me MS. Apple phone but will chuck this in the bin when I retire.

Used to play rugby badly; peaked at 26 and have been playing from the sidelines and the side of the TV ever since. Haven't been called for international duty yet. Used to cycle everywhere, until my knee was replaced two years ago.

No tattoos or piercings. It wouldn't improve the view, unfortunately.

Music - old rocker: Genesis, Yes, Rush, etc. Now listening to my son's favourites; Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Architects, Enter Shikari, Pearl Jam.

Favourite flag: A white one. Everyone's happy then. That or the Luxembourg flag.

Camping: Family used to camp in Cornwall when I was a kid (Pentewan Sands/Mevagissey) and was a big wild camper in my teens until I started driving.

Ever been in love: Once. I still am.

Fake tan: Once as fancy dress when blacking up was acceptable. It was Bisto though, pre-fake tan.

Favourite City: Tough one, but I'll say San Francisco. Very fortunate to have visited lots of countries.

Favourite TV progs: Not many made today. Morse, Endeavour, Unforgotten, Band of Brothers, Old Grey Whistle Test episodes.

Favourite Films: Dark Star, Trainspotting, Saving Private Ryan and any quality black and white pre-1970s (e.g. Ice Cold in Alex). Any un-PC comedies (Blazing Saddles) and all religious films at Christmas, Easter, Passover, etc.

Wealthy: I would be if I was single with no kids.

Work: When I have to. My father couldn't afford to send me to Uni, but I studied in my spare time and just about managed to pass accountancy and tax exams, over thirty years ago. Not surprisingly I'm a Chartered Accountant.

Most like about myself: Makes a really good cup of tea and I excel at clearing out the garage.
Least like about myself: Takes life too seriously sometimes.
