Newly diagnosed, 82 HbA1c 82 MMOL/MOL

Maybe I'm not eating enough, but what can i eat? I cant have rice or sandwiches or cereal right

Dinner tonight, half can tuna, Quorn steak and vegetables

what other things can I eat? Uusually lunch is salmon and salad or chicken and salad, what can i have different at dinner time?

Bacon and eggs are very nice without bread, and so is eggs and cheese if you don't eat meat.
Fatty chicken legs are tastier and have more calories than breasts, and adding cream or butter to veggies makes them a lot more filling and tastier.

Full fat natural Greek yoghurt is very filling too, if you like a quick and easy breakfast.
 
Imagine your plate is a pie chart, like the eatwell plate. You get calories from each macronutrient, as you reduce the carbohydrate share, the other 2 HAVE to increase to fill the chart up.

Hi, it can be a struggle at first. I don't want to duplicate what's been said already but the wobbly feelings you're having, if my experience is any guide, is firstly your bgs falling from a problematic high level to a more normal one, and secondly the rollercoaster ride you create of low-carbing, but then adding a lot of carb via porridge and syrup. It's the resulting bg ups and downs that make you have the effects you describe.

I really like porridge (with honey, whisky and cream for preference) but I last ate it over three years ago. It's just no good for me and I prefer my normal bgs and no diabetes symptoms to porridge.

I try to have a good mix so that I don't need to eat the same thing more than once a fortnight - my other half is not diabetic but is happy with having fewer carbs so that helps. In a given two week period I'll probably have a steak/chop/lamb twice, maybe two or three variants of a chicken curry (maybe six meals there?), grilled fish and a fish stew, a chilli, omelettes with various bits of things added, a mince and peas kheema mattar, a proper fryup (eggs, bacon, 98% meat sausages, black pudding, mushrooms), cauliflower cheese and bacon, bolognese sauce (without pasta, extra mushrooms instead) cheese and charcuterie etc. For veg I do creamed leeks, cabbage, swede, spinach, cauliflower, that sort of thing. Using a variety of herbs and spices stops things tasting too samey.

A lot of those meals I batch cook in quantity where I can so there's always something in the fridge. I also plan well ahead - nothing last minute.

Quick question, can cashew nuts and almonds be consumed?
Almonds 7g/100g weight, I eat them all the time. Cashews usually around 18g/100g weight, way too carby for me. Hazelnuts, walnuts, brazil nuts are all in almond territory and I'd suggest them rather than cashews.

For me cashews are odd, they definitely don't act like they're 18gr carbs per 100 on my blood glucose so I eat them.
Also, if you really like them, you can of course eat a bit less than half the amount you would eat from almonds and therefore eat the same amount of carbs. And then eat some cheese to fill up. :)

Eat the whole can. More veg, add a cheese sauce to the veg or butter.

have a look at the recipe sites for ideas (dietdoctor.com, ditchthecarbs.com etc etc etc ). Or Google a well know meal and add low carb /keto. Not only will you get ways if adjusting that meal but you’ll have yet another recipe site to go back to.

I use an app called “copy me that” to build my own searchable/editable cookbook. Brilliant. So much better then. Million screen shots that get lost. Just a quick click from webpage to cookbook.

thanks for the tips, my total cholesterol was 6, little high as 5 is normal. I dont want to add too much red meat every day. I am of Indian decent so maybe Lentals and other things, I am happy Cashew and almonds are ok to eat

Please do a bit of reading around cholesterol before cutting out beneficial foods. Total levels mean little as I explained above in post #32 Lentils can pack a punch bgl wise so tread very carefully and test. In the meantime white meats and fish would be better than a lot of legumes.

I have a similar (calculated) cholesterol level which has fallen markedly since I dropped carbs and increased animal fats and red meat. I am entirely relaxed about what the figure is as there is extremely little good evidence for it being a problem. Most of the cholesterol in your body is made by your body - the usual figure quoted is 80%.

Lentils are pretty high carb (20g/100g) and I would be careful with them - they're not something I use very often. I'd recommend doing a bit of before and two hours after bg testing to see what the impact is. Doing that I found I'm relatively ok with smallish amounts of beans and chickpeas. We're all different - I won't eat cashews but maybe you can.

Same here, I did everything I was not supposed to do, dropped carbs to less than 20gr a day and eat plenty of animal fats, chicken with skin, eggs, bacon, plenty of red meat, I even cook with pork lard now. My BG, my tryglicerides, my cholestrol all came down from very high to perfectly normal. No meds.
 
Still doesn't explain the shakes and nervous stature this morning, maybe I am really nervous I keep testing or its my body getting used to my new low sugar and low carb regime which I have started 10 days. I used to eat cholate every day maybe the shakes are due to the change. Bread was normal as well on a daily basis. Things have chnaged drastically in my diet but its definitly not net zero carbs
Think of your body as a 2 year old toddler. That toddler has a favourite toy (carbs) but that toy is dangerous and has to be taken away so the toddler throws an almighty tantrum demanding the toy (carbs) back. The toddler will try every trick in the book, screaming, kicking , crying, throwing things, but you are the responsible adult and you will not give the toy back. The toddler isn't being harmed by having the toy taken away.
You can offer alternative toys (low carb food), distractions (go to the playground) hugs and rewards, whatever you can imagine would help, but the one thing you'd never do is give the dangerous toy back.

Your body (your toddler) is going through enormous changes to all its routines and its favorites, but like a toddler in just a few days it will soon adapt and forget. You will get used to the diagnosis, the new ways and the changes, just be understanding of your inner toddler.

Hi – newly diagnosed 45 year old. My height around 5ft 11 and I weighed around 104KG around 2 weeks ago, now weigh around 98KG. Always been going to the gym around 3-4 times a week. But was mainly focusing on weights and resistance training. These are my HbA1c 82 MMOL/MOL results, I am totally shocked and having panic attacks sometimes, I start thinking it’s the end of my life. In between the last 2 weeks I have had no crisps or chocolates and I could have 2-3 daily of each. My doctor is having a consolation with me tomorrow, what will they do put me on Metformin? I am fixing my diet and I sit on the office chair most days but doing more exercise lost around 6KG in two weeks. What shall I say to the doctor tomorrow? I rather I sort this out naturally. I use to drink 2 times a week, grabbing ready made sandwiches on the way home, with crips sand chocolate every day. Please give me some hope and tell me what I should be doing.
Hello, I was newly diagnosed last year with a high HbA1c at the age of 49 with a body weight of 120kgs, I was placed on Metformin 2 x 100mg daily and referred to the diabetic centre which is absolutely brilliant and a great source for your GP practice. I have taken daily blood sugars with my Nexus monitor where the prick tests can be monitored.

If you get the chance ask to be referred to a fitness 12 week programme that has been developed for diabetics, I have managed to get my levels down from 110 to 52 in less than one year. You are on the right track with the weight loss, increase your cardio!! Swimming has done wonders along with walking, just make it fun and cut down on the processed foot and drink plenty of water. Move around the office, chat and sit with someone or take lunch so you are moving and heart rate app is great also like Garmin or similar.

It is very hard to grasp, me and my brother were both diagnosed the same day and its not the end of the world. if you need any help ask to be placed on a diabetic awareness course run by most hospitals or GP practices.
 
Morning guys - feel better today no shakes etc, not going to have a skinny latte like yesterday will have a green tea instead. Did a test now and the lowest I have seen in all my 10 days of being diagnosed as a diabetic, 6.9. Yesterday I ate Porridge/syrup for lunch, dinner was Quorn Steak, packet Veg, half can tuna, snacks almonds and cashews and I went to a football game last night I had one glass of wine and one beer but did a lot of walking and the morning level of 6.9 is the lowest I have had.

Wow its stories like this which really cheer me up and make me put my chin up, well done to you mate, You said you were placed on 2x Metaformin did you take these to bring down your level from 110 to 52 in one year? What changes did you make?
