Hi all, I'm carb counting and I'm confused about nuts. The pecan nuts I like are 7.2 gms of carbs with an 8.6 gms of fibre per 100 gms of nut. So does this mean the fibre in the nuts makes them uncountable , or does it mean that the extra fibre to carb ratio results in the fibre cancelling out a portion of any other carbs eaten at the same time?

I just count the carbs in nuts, I ignore the fibre.
I eat a lot of nuts as I find them a healthy way to add extra calories to my diet, they fill me up too.

This problem is sometimes caused by the US habit of giving a carb content figure including fibre, from which you need to subtract the fibre amount, giving a "net carb" result.

In the UK fibre and carb is counted separately - so your pecans are 7.2g carb PLUS 8.6 g fibre. The fibre does not get digested to glucose. It doesn't (unfortunately) cancel out any of the carb, so you're effectively eating a food with 7.2% carb - or eat 100g of pecans, you've eaten 7g carb.

I believe fibre slows down the metabolism process so you may not get the blood sugar ’spike’ , but a slower, lower curve on your graph if you are using a CGM to view your blood sugar patterns.

Hi yes Kenny A explained to me and I've been doing it 'all wrong' you are right and this explains why I'm getting raised sugars after 2 hours! Thanks for replying

I fell for this too, waaaay back when first diagnosed. Most of what I read came from across the pond, and there I was thinking I was managing negative carbs, haha. Needless to say my meter set me right on that front, no unlimited minus-carbs for me, alas... ;)
