I have just realised something strange. For something over a year, I have had a very painful tongue. The dentist said I have "a geographic tongue" with shiny patches on it. This shouldn't be painful. However, what is likely to be painful is ulcers, one of which he saw. I seem to have had a series of ulcers - one or two after another plus a feeling of electric shocks shooting through my tongue. There seems to be no cure for it.
Also, my gums swell, causing more difficulty when eating or trying to fit my false teeth.
Also, for the last while, maybe about 9 or 10 months, the toothpaste I have always used feels as though it is burning my mouth - an effect which lasts until after I have my first cup of tea.
It's not life threatening, or even a serious problem, but it is uncomfortable.
I mentioned to Neil the toothpaste thing and he brought home a tube of unflavoured toothpaste - I didn't know anyone made such a thing. Guess what - three days on, no burning mouth, no swollen gums and no ulcers or pain in my tongue. Can just toothpaste do that? Perhaps Colgate have changed their recipe and put something in that I react to, perhaps I have developed an intolerance over the years. Who knows, but it does seem to have been fixed just by this change of toothpaste.
I only mention this because maybe someone else out there has such a problem and it might be worth trying to find if something simple could be causing a reaction.
