Diabetic Low Carber's I need your advice

My recent visit to the doctor's was a complete and utter disaster!! I have not lost any weight in a month (except for a pound) and I stupidly decided to take my parents with me to the appointment as I wanted to discuss starting on the LCHF diet, the doctor just completely blanked out any thought or idea about other diets and said that I should just stick with 'The Diabetic Diet' and focus on reducing my fat intake. I argued back with the doctor and told her stories of diabetic's sticking with the LCHF diet, losing weight reducing medication and becoming healthier. I told her to look at dietdoctor.com and she was still adamant that LCHF is still bad even with all the positive results. So my parents then decide to butt in and take the advice from the doctor as in their words they said 'the doctor knows best', after this my blood was boiling and couldn't even look at my parents. Then the doctor reviewed my BS levels and told me that there will be no need for testing from now on as they are generally below 10 (even though she saw one reading on 12.5 after I had my lunch today). When that happened I told her to take a look at this forum and she wouldn't. I now need advice on what to do now as I am clueless on what to do.

How old are you ? Do you prepare your own food ? Sounds like your doctor is a bit behind with the times. No testing and BG of 12.5 ?? Crazy !

Can I ask how old you are? I'm assuming you still live at home and don't have control of shopping or making your own meals. If that is the case, I'd encourage you to maybe get your parents involved in this site. Let them read some of the success stories and even chat to some people who have taken control of their diabetes through following a LCHF diet.

Is there a diabetic nurse at your health centre? If there is, maybe they would support you with the diet you wish to follow and testing. I know people moan about all doctors and DNs, but there are some enlightened ones out there. My DN got me to buy the Carbs and Cals book, and is supporting me testing daily as she says that while it is expensive to prescibe the test strips she considers it money well spent if it means I keep my BS levels below 8. In my opinion 'generally below 10' is probably not low enough, so it would be worth seeing someone else and getting another opinion.

I agree on getting your parents involved. Have then watch the video The food revolution at the dietdoctor.com. The goal should be for you to get your BS down as low as possible, 10 is way too high. There are so many riscs with having a too high BS, hopefully you will get your parents to understand and support you! GL!

Hi, I was wondering how you were doing. Not so good huh? Well I reckon there's lots of positives to come out of your visit to the doctor. Firstly you now know who your friends are!.....(that'll be us lot here on the forum) Secondly you know that LCHF is right for you. Thirdly.....you stood up for yourself at the doctor's!!! Well done, it took me 50 + years to do that!

So my advice is listen to what your doctor and your parents say.....and then do the opposite. Keep testing, keep low carbing, keep exercising. I think you've just reached a plateau in your weightloss and you will continue to lose weight again soon. It happens to most of us and it's depressing at the time, but you will get over this phase....honestly. Don't be bullied into giving up what you've started, or into having unnecessary surgery (I've read your other thread).

You are not as clueless as you say you are. The key is low carb with enough good protein and fats so that you aren't hungry. This is why low fat diets do not work......you feel hungry and starve yourself of essential fats.

This is just a minor blip. You CAN do this. Just think how good it will be when you go back to that doctor and she doesn't even recognise you because you've lost so much weight! I just love proving people wrong....don't you?

I will be 21 on Friday. I do prepare most of my own food, but it is mainly lunch and breakfast. As for the evening meal it varies if my family is hungry, if not it's usually toast or snacking. As for drinks its mainly water, cups of tea or coffee with semi skimmed milk and diet coke, but whenever I try to have a glass of milk my parents go mad as when I'm away at uni 4 pints of milk last them a week, but when I'm back 4 pints last 3 days.

My parents will not get involved with this site at all, I tried it a few months ago but they would not listen to me or read the stories. Yes there is a diabetic nurse, but she agrees with the doctor and even gave me a piece of paper which at the top read 'A Typical Type 2 Diabetes Diet'. I cannot see another doctor as the area that I live in has a gp postcode scheme and whenever a gp asks for my postcode when I go to register they say 'oh, sorry but we do not accept patients from your area. You will have to register with a gp in your local area.'

My BS levels have been fairly average ranging from 3.6 to 6.5. At the time I tested and got 12.5 I had like 4 pints of Coors Light Lager and Carbonara with garlic bread.

i am sure your parent dun stuff food in your mouth.

That is true they don't, but they do not leave any options for me to have for breakfast or lunch. My parents still have a freezer full of meat from shopping at a butchers market a month ago that I cannot have during the week unless they are hungry as they think that I am being greedy for having steak or pork chops or minted lamb.

Yes I do love proving people wrong and when I go back to university in September I am going to do exactly that. My doctor in Derby is crazy about testing BS levels. Also I went to the butchers supermarket that my parents buy the meat from and the prices are great. I can get; 7x Rib-Eye Steaks for £10, 13-15 Minty Lamb Loin Chops for £10, 12-15 Thick Cut Pork Loin Steaks for £10, 8-10 Skinless Chicken Thighs for £5 and other good quality meats as well. I am also joining the gym at the uni and will have my own personal fitness instructor for £22 a month, even though yesterday got me down I have bounced back up from it and looking positive into the future.

Looks like you have made a decision, great! Keep to it and try to make your way through your parents fridge/freezer. Egg with butter, egg and bacon, tinned mackerel (remove the tomatoe sauce) with mayonnaise are my top 3 breakfast alternatives.

They will not let me make my way through the fridge/freezer and can't have eggs or bacon unless its for the evening meal and accompanied with sausages, beans and chips. Also the times that I do have my meals at are like 6 hours apart. Breakfast at 6:30am, Lunch at 12:30pm and Dinner at 6:30pm.

I bet you cant wait to get back to uni. If you only could get them to watch the food revolution.. its just an hour of their life. Then they might start to understand that high BS levels are toxic and that you are right when you say that you need to stay away from carbs. Wish I could do something to help you out!

Can you go out to a local cafe for a cooked breakfast? 6:30 a.m. is an unholy hour to eat when you are on your summer hols!

Then maybe have salad and sliced ham or cheese for lunch, and whatever evening meal is on offer but not eating any potatoes, pasta, rice or bread that's put on the plate.

If you just refuse the food your parents may get the message, but you are old enough to buy your own - tinned tuna, celery, nuts, those packets of ready crisped bacon - you can keep yourself topped up food-wise.

I got them to watch the food revolution back in April and they just dismissed as utter bull**** and feeding me lies. Hopefully that should change now as the guardian put up an article today reading 'The war on fat is over - and I won' http://www.theguardian.com/lifeands...on-fat-is-over-and-i-won-jay-rayner?CMP=fb_gu

Hi Rosie, unfortunately for me their is no local café near me and if their was I wouldn't be able to have it as I have no money to spend. I have been without any money since June and jobless since April, which has now forced me to apply for countless jobs and not getting interviews or even feedback, just the usual 'we have found someone else who is more suitably qualified'. I know that 6:30 am is quite early, but I don't like to stay in bed when I am wide awake and every time I wake up the first thing that I do is have my breakfast as I always feel hungry when I wake up.

Have you thought about just not eatingtjecarbs on theplatethey serve you.. Ie fry up.. You take your plate and literally throw all the carb laden food in the bin.

Then all you have to do is to buy some cheese etc to put on your plate instead.

You are not a child anymore..it would soon give them the message that no matter what you will not eat carbs.

Sure, initially you got to be determined to literally put the carbs in the bin.... But you only need to do that for a few meals and they will
A) not serve
B) tell you to get your own food...

Did you not read what @akindrat18 wrote:

so how does he do the "all you have to do is to buy some cheese etc to put on your plate instead" if he has no money coming in ?

A couple of months ago you were writing that you were being referred to a lifestyle programme. Is this your University doctor rather than
your home doctor? I really think that you could do with some sustained professional support.

Brilliant advice @zand.
@akindrat18 I have also been wondering how you are doing. I take it that you are finished with uni until autumn now? So during the break do you have time to be able to step up the exercise? It doesn't have to be expensive, lots of ways to just move more and all activity can speed up weight loss.

I do detect a more positive attitude from you than previously. If you can show all the people doubting you that you can lose weight, improve blood glucose readings etc that will only increase your wellbeing and confidence. At your age, you potentially have many years of healthy life ahead. You are the best person to work out your own solutions. You will be able to get support on the forum, and I know that there is a least one other person on here that has been wondering how you are, so keep posting.

Hi phoenix, yes I was being referred to a lifestyle programme in Derby but it took them forever to get back to me and when I told them that I was going back to Stoke, they told me to reapply in September. Then I found out that there is one in Stoke, but I have to commit to the programme for a year and the consultant that I saw said to me to eat 10 - 12 portions of carbohydrates, 3 - 5 portions of protein and 1 - 2 portions of fat everyday.

Hi Pipp, I've had some highs and some real lows since finishing second year of uni back in April. I've also been battling depression and boredom, plus one of my closet friends died recently. I have stepped up the exercise at home with doing Mr Motivators BLT workout, jogging to and from the shop with errands and lifting weights. What I've decided to do for when I go back uni in August is to join the gym for £21 every month, take a health MOT at the gym, discuss my workout with an instructor and see which classes I could take. I've also started to experiment with cheese as last week at a local restaurant they had on the starter menu 'Sliced Courgettes with Melted Mozzeralla Cheese' it was so delicious and it got me thinking of what I could have with melted cheese, so if anyone have suggestions for foods that go well with melted cheese then I am all ears for you.

My best melted cheese tip is soo easy. Bacon on a own plate, cheese on top of that. Bake for 10 min in 225 degrees Celsius. Let cool down a bit. Done!
A super snack when everyone have crisps or instead of any meal!

I can understand the reasons why you would feel bored, and depressed. Sorry about the loss of your friend. That is so sad.
It must get boring for you in the break from uni too. That is a long time to have nothing to do, and no money. Can you use some of the time to get ahead with your studies? Last year at uni is intense and time goes so quickly so if you have a dissertation to complete, you have a good few months to get the bulk of it in draft form. That will leave you more time to spend on fitness when you get back to Derby in September.
Derby uni has a good student support service. You can access that even during the summer break, so perhaps you could email them for advice? Also, student union will have clubs and societies, and some sport you could join in. If you work on the fitness through the rest of the break you won't find it too difficult to take part in the autumn semester. You can get student discount at some gyms and sport centres, even in the holidays. I am sure you can come up with other ideas too.
As for courgettes they are delicious and quite plentiful at this time of year. They make a good substitute for pasta. If you get a strongly flavoured cheese you don't need to use as much as you do with mild cheese to get that same taste.

Hope you continue to stay positive, you can succeed.

when i am dead poor. i would take an egg for each meal. cucumber as the main source of vegetable. i know its tough but i think its worth the effort. of course i am in asia, i dun have a good health care here. beside the cost of health care. its still your choice.
