I was diagnosed as prediabetic then T2 about 5 years ago, now RH, can probably understand it from GPs view. All of them didn't have a clue!
Diabetes has so many variations and we are all totally different and unique that it doesn't surprise me that there is plenty of misdiagnosis!

Thanks for getting this back on topic rather than an IT threado_O

I can't blame the GP, I've been with the diabetes team/consultant at a major hospital.... reading between the lines seems this is the first time in the 2yrs that they've checked my blood using the C Peptide test... now waiting for a meeting with the consultant to see where things go from here

It's unfortunate that the thread got derailed and must have been frustrating for you. Sometimes people do not intentionally set out to derail but in this instance you must have felt pretty helpless in trying to bring it back on track.

`it does serve as a reminder that off topic posts should really have a thread of their own.

Hi, I agree with @Bluetit1802 that you may find metformin a disappointment.

My experience of type 2, backed by the experiences of many on the forum, is that diet is the main factor in controlling T2.

At least you are already used to carb counting! Except that now you'll need to count smaller numbers.
Good job you are already fit and active. That should help a lot.

Please come back and tell us how you do with the consultant appt. I would love to hear your experiences from your unique perspective.

The ideal values are:
4 to 7mmol/l before meals.
less than 10mmol/l 90 minutes after a meal
around 8mmol/l at bedtime.
check out the net for things like GI diet and somewhere on this forum is an excellent link to a carb.counting link.Take a note of what you have eaten and then if your sugars are up reduce intake of that particular food.
Sorry for that. Didn't mean to derail the thread

Still don't know what type I am. When first diagnosed in March I was told I was type 1. Saw GP in sept who told me 'as he was more experienced than the hospital' I am type 2 (no tests etc - he can just tell!). Diabetic nurse laughed when I told her, then found the test which identifies the type had gone missing! Saw specialist at hospital today - he laughed when I told him what GP had said, but still wouldn't commit or test again! He just stated they want to control my system regardless of which type I am. He mentioned meta for min (which I thought was for type 2s) then opted not to go for that. Even when I asked him about different causes of type 1 & 2 I just couldn't tie him down at all. He just told me to eat regularly, blood test more frequently at different times of the day rather than before meals as I was told to do by diabetic specialist nurse then he'll see me again in 3 months to decide on next steps. No mention of DAFNE (or any similar courses). Really confused now.

I doubt it is that you are changing from type 1 to type 2 so much as you are managing and understanding your condition more. I was on 4 metformin a day with the threat of having to on insulin, so I got my head down and lost weight and got fit. 5 Years later I am on one metformin, I eat healthilly, do not use the word diet its fatal. I exercise regularly walking and cycling. I am 2 stone lighter and can eat pretty much what I want in moderation. I have been recording 6.2 constantly for years! My ex managed her condition with diet and exercise only and became classes as no longer diabetic.

I'm definitely re-diagnosed as Type 2, the consultant has given me a letter to confirm. My initial diagnosis as Type 1 was apparently due to me not being a "typical" Type 2... I'm average weight, have always exercised (regularly hike mountains) & have a good diet... I've been told it's likely due to genetics as they don't seem to be able to figure it out any other way.

I've always had good control except during exercise when I've had to take silly amounts of carb to keep my levels up

Huh, that rings a bell with me too. I'm frustratingly exercise intolerant. 80g of carbs for 45 min cycle and I'm still hitting hypo land. My Endio's looking into some problems with my blood sugar management, maybe I should talk to him about classification too?, so you had the antibodies too?

Get them to do a C Peptide and GAD antibody test.. they'd never done one on me in the 2yrs I'd been diagnosed as type 1. To be honest it's like having my life back, I can climb mountains and plan a day out without carrying 4/5 bags of jellybabies and having to test every 20 minutes, just wished it would have been checked out earlier.

Hi. What where the gad and c peptide results? I was told I'm type 1 about a year ago. The blood test they did said I was gad negative and now I am just waiting in the city peptide results.

The GAD test was negative but apparently that isn't conclusive in determining if you have type 1 (http://www.diabetes.co.uk/gad-antibody-test.html)

Can't quite remember the exact results of the C Peptide but I believe I had a reasonably high level which suggests I'm still producing some insulin which I'm now 100% sure of (http://www.diabetes.co.uk/c-peptide-test.html)
