Please can someone help me. I am type 2 and last night had my first hypo ever - very scary. I was told by my nurse that i had to watch my sugar intake, no more than 5 grams of sugar per 100g of food. For the past week i have had less than 20g of sugar per day.

However i have heard other diabetics says you have to watch your carbs too - what should i be concentrating on - low sugar content or low carbs ??

Thanks

Low carbs, no pasta, rice, bread (or flour products) potato. Don't eat low fat products, the fat is replaced with sugar. Eat avocado, butter, eggs, butter, bacon, green veg like sprouts, green beans, cabbage, broccoli.

I'll tag @daisy to provide you with some basic information that will help. You have to watch the carb content as well as the sugar.
It will get clearer. Read round the forum and come back with any questions you have.
Have you got a meter? I ask because we have individual responses to foods and so what is suitable for one person may not be suitable for another. Unless your reading proved that you hadd a hypo it may well have been a false one. This is usually happens when you have been running high for a while and then start to try and manage your diabetes and bring your blood sugars down.

What medication are you on. If you are lowering your carb intake and have some medications then that can cause a hypo.

When looking at packaging just look for the carb count as sugar is included in this number. When you had the hypo did you test your BS as although your body is a good indicator you do need to test to be sure.

Thanks for all your advice, yes i am on gliclazide, my bs was 4. I am so upset and confused, i know how to watch my sugar, no more than 5g per 100g but how much carbs a day should i be looking at?

from the main page on carbs

  • Moderate carbohydrate: 130 to 225g of carbs
  • Low carbohydrate: under 130g of carbs
  • Very low carbohydrate: under 30g of carbs
But even tho low carb is good for diabetes control it would probably have nothing to do with your hypo, as said earlier you probably have been running high for a while and cutting sugar out plus gliclazide could well be the cause...

Quite surprised you have been put on gliclazide , it seems a bit OTT if you are newly diagnosed, most docs start you off on diet or diet+ metformin

PS. Do not add sugar to anything and just count total carbs in food , I expect daisy will be along soon, the resident carb expert........... @daisy1

Hi go back to your thread from a while ago http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/im-new-and-scared.47512/ where daisy gave you the advice on carbs ......

to figure out why you had a hypo we need some info

Have you lost weight
exercise
carbs you are eating
All meds

etc etc..

I tend to agree with @Daibell that maybe you need your meds looked at but it could be many things, just thinking gliclazide as it caused a workmate to have hypos when he was using it............
