Low blood sugar

Since being diagnosed prediabetic 16 months ago I have followed a low carb diet and my last reading in August 2019 was 40 so no longer pre diabetic. I watch my diet very carefully to maintain the situation. Recently I have been suffering from occasional sudden sweating but have not thought it was connected in any way. However twice in the last month and indeed this morning I have felt very light headed, immediately took my level which was 3.4. Soon got it back to 4.7. The odd thing is that on both occasions I had porridge with raspberries for breakfast at 8am as a special treat! 4 hours later I crashed! Any ideas?

Could be Reactive Hypoglycemia. If you have a big spike in your bloodsugars, you get a big insulin response... But rather more insulin than you need, so you go hypo after a few hours. Can't diagnose on here of course, but if you ate carbs and crashed afterwards... That's a likely cause.

I do not have diabetes
Hi @Pittston
I got a referral because I ate porridge, then had a hypoglycaemic episode about three hours later.
I after many tests was diagnosed as Reactive Hypoglycaemic.

If you do have hypoglycaemic episodes, a food diary is so important to your medical team to sort what tests you will need for diagnosis.

We have a sub forum on RH. There is a lot of great advice on there.
Do have a read and if you need any advice especially dietary advice, then please do ask.
RH is a dietary condition, it's all about what you eat.

Best wishes

I am so grateful for your response. I will certainly start by keeping a diary and indeed speak with my DN.
Best wishes

I would have to advise you, that there is a high likelihood that your DN, would be ignorant of RH and other hypoglycaemic conditions. It is not in their training. It is probably the same with your GP.
Only a specialist endocrinologist, has the knowledge and can organise the necessary tests to get a diagnosis.

Best wishes

Thanks for that, you are a mind if information

Not really!
Once I was diagnosed, there wasn't much anywhere, on how to treat RH.
I wanted to know more about the cause, reason and research done by clinical trials and studies. The usual outdated advice about a condition that still told patients to eat food that was actually making them worse, yes it reduced symptoms to a degree but it didn't stop me going hypo constantly.
My endocrinologist and I had many discussions on what my nutritional needs should be, going Keto, and seeing the results, swayed his opinion.
I had to find a way to get my life back!
I had to because, I have fought all my life to get on.
Life has not be too kind to me, but I do believe that I'm lucky, simply because, things have fallen into place quite neatly, there is too much to live for!
If I didn't control my condition, and not getting the diagnosis, also to my endocrinologist, I know I wouldn't be here now!
This forum helped so much!
The advice about very low carb, Keto diet, and little things that may not be for you, but useful information, what to look for, how you use a glucometer properly, how to record in a food diary.
And other personal experiences from the posters, especially one!

I really needed to find out, it is my life, my health, there was very little out there!

Best wishes
