Our local health service has recently changed the way they work. It used to be local opticians who did the diabetic eye screening and sent the results off the Dundee or somewhere. They were the ones who got in touch with the results. When the optician sees an eye problem - other than retinopathy - they refer the patient to the hospital. Now one department at the hospital deals with referred problems while another deals with the diabetic care, including testing eyes. The optician doesn't come into it at all, other than making new glasses.
Trouble is, the one department at the hospital is uneasy about dealing with they eyes of someone who is under the care of the other department. So, having got ourselves there, just in time (heavy traffic hold ups) I had to persuade the woman in the diabetes clinic to actually do the retinopathy scan. She did it, but was quite uneasy about it. It seems to me that a person could fall between the two and arising problems could be missed. Progress!
