Yep - I get a check twice a year. Part, of my overall diabetes check, kidneys etc.
In between I massage feet using a cream and ensure that nails are trimmed and hard skin is kept down.
Well worth the small effort.

An annual foot check is part of the NICE pathway guidelines. My DN did mine, although I would prefer a proper podiatrist.

Definitely worth getting your feet checked every year or when problems develop. I get mine checked 12 monthly but do have to make the appointment myself, beforehand I would get them checked at my diabetes clinic.

Alan gives some good advice about foot care in-between appointments.

I always get my feet checked at my reviews but I've never actually received a letter inviting me for a foot check. Perhaps you're special :)

My feet are checked once a year as part of my annual revue
I just have to make sure they are clean before I go
The nurse just looks over them and checks for any numb patches
it takes a few minutes

I get mine checked at my annual review too.

Last year wore brand new black socks - and was horrified when I took them off at the check to find that I had black fluff all over my feet! The nurse found it quite funny!

I actually had to fight for a foot check, even though I knew I had neuropathy and a very bad blister, which I suspected was infected. Because of all the good info I read from you fine folks, I brought up the sorry state of my feet at my first appointment with my DN. He said I'd have to speak to the doctor about it. About 10 days later I had an appointment with my GP (who is the diabetic specialist at our surgery) and he clearly wasn't interested in looking at my feet! I insisted, and he said he only had 10 minutes total to give me and he had lots of things to tell me. I told him I thought my foot might be infected and that after he was through telling me what he need to tell me, I was going to A&E if he would't look at my feet. He gave a big sigh and finally agreed to look at them. He prescribed antibiotics and gave me one of those numbness tests, and referred me to the diabetic foot clinic/podiatrist. I've had three appointments there and the infection is now completely cleared up.

While I was there, I met an old man in a wheelchair who struck up a conversation with me by commenting on the color of my hair. We started talking and he knocked his leg with his cane, and told me he had his foot removed. He said it all started with an ingrown toenail. He implored me to take extra special care of my feet. I won't forget that conversation in a hurry. He said, "Spend as much time taking care of your feet as you do putting on your makeup and doing your hair." He said it with a big smile and wasn't being insulting, just driving home the point that diabetics need to make time for this very important task. A great-aunt of mine also lost her foot to diabetic neuropathy, but I wasn't even born then. This old man sure gave me a wake-up call!

I am very fortunate in that I get to see an NHS podiatrist every three months, but I fear that is more to do with the rheumatoid arthritis than the diabetes.
No matter - it all helps.

I had 6 cycles of chemotherapy this time last year, finished in July. Foot and finger Neuropathy is a common side effect of chemo drugs. I started with it about halfway through chemo. I had my feet checked by my consultant oncologist and was told it almost always disappears within 12 months, sometimes longer, occasionally never. Its because the chemo kills off the nerve endings, but these can and usually do grow back. I still have it, but my feet aren't actually numb, just feel numb to me. Odd feeling especially in bed.

When I was diagnosed with T2 earlier this year and read about the foot neuropathy complications I told my DN I still have chemo-induced neuropathy. She then checked them for me and said I would get an appointment with the local podiatrist. That was February. I still haven't heard anything further. I have decided to chase it up, and if necessary pay for a consultation.

Please don't go digging around in your foot and don't leave it either. Take your foot to a doctors or podiatrist to investigate.

I have a check up every year, they have to see if you still have feelings in your feet as your suppose to keep your feet nice and soft. You will also have to have a retinal eye screening once a year also, nothing to worry about

I haven't had a letter:arghh: but I do feet checks at the hospital and I also check my own feet:)

I was told, (a few years ago) that having the odd hair growing on the top part of your toes is a sign that they are healthy:nurse:
