    Hampers?

Depends whether you want it to be all dry/tinned goods, or to include some fresh. You could put in some nice cheeses, some nuts, and packets of oatcakes and/or sesame Ryvita (check the label - you're looking for 5g of carb per 100g - or less. Don't eat too many at once!). Sugar-free peanut...

Funny looks at the chemist's !!!

My best one at Boots was when I asked for a bottle of contact lens Comfort Drops. I was told most firmly by the lady behind the counter that on NO ACCOUNT should I put anything in my eyes when wearing contact lenses. I was so surprised that I shut my mouth and walked out; it was either that or...

    Sitting here in tears

Do go to the CAB - you need expert help with your employment/financial situation. It's possible to sort it yourself but you have to be strong. If you have a proper contract of employment you should have been getting statutory sick pay for the time you've been off work; also if it is genuine...

    Blister inbetween toes

I'm prone to red and sore strips immediately beneath my breasts, but a shake of the powder smoothed in there stops it in its tracks. I was told not to use any talc before a mammogram and was red and sore again by the time I got back home! - less than 5 hours after my shower. I also use it under...

    Simvastatin caution

Hi Defren Yep - statins, some BP drugs and Metformin all have hair loss as a side-effect. We can't win! It would seem logical that the original substance that statins are based on might have some of the same side-effects, so watch closely. The change-over from Simvastatin to Atorvastatin is...

Does anyone get recurrent thrush? - Anonymous Question

Live yoghurt can help, both eaten and applied to the affected area - all those friendly bacteria! Viv 8)

Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

Re: Type 2's : What was your fasting blood glucose in a morn Try not to stress too much about early morning readings - Dawn Phenomenon can take ages to settle. It took mine at least 12 months. If mine's higher than I like - 5.8 on Tuesday - I check mid-afternoon, well after lunch. That was 4.0...

    Simvastatin caution

I'm pretty sure cost will have had something to do with it. The PCT seem to worry about cost more than the practice. On the other hand, at least they have admitted that Simvastatin has bad side-effects! After my experience with it I now won't take statins at all. Surprisingly, only one of our 3...

    Simvastatin caution

My local GP practice have announced, in our monthly local Newsletter, that they are changing all patients currently on 40mg or more ( ) of Simvastatin, over to Atorvastatin because of the side effects. Just thought I'd share that with you all :D Viv 8)

how long did it take you to lower Bgs?

In my case it took at least 12 months before they were stable in the range I like them; the Dawn Phenomenon carried on for a while, despite me low-carbing at around 30g per day. I'm pretty sure my problem was insulin resistance; as my weight dropped, so the insulin became more effective and my...

    Flu and pneumonia jabs

I used to get flu jabs because of mild asthma; now I get it because of Type 2 diabetes. Both are "at-risk" conditions and you should have them. I think the same applies to the pneumonia jab: diabetes is an "at-risk" condition. Everyone over 65 should have one as a matter of course (NHS...

GP pressure to use uniform testing strips

I'm Type 2. My practice uses Freestyle Lite, which they hand out to ALL diabetics regardless of type, together with strips on prescription. This is adequate for my needs; don't know about Type 1s. I think they do this because the strips are cheaper if they buy them in bulk. They do encourage...

    diet, BG monitors and syptoms

Hi Jill, and welcome. Daisy1 will be along soon with the page of advice we give to newbies. You may find that the advice many of us live by and hand out goes against what you have learned in the NHS, and what most professionals still hand out. Take me as an example - I cannot tolerate starchy...

    Suggestions for low carb veggie

Oh, how I wish! Rose Elliott wrote a low-carb book for vegetarians some years ago. Try Amazon. Or just Google "low-carb vegetarian" and see what happens? Viv 8)

Newbie here - What should my blood glucose be between?

Re: Newbie here - What should by blood glucose be between? MaryJ is quite right. I've been low-carbing since April 2010, and I would not be diagnosed diabetic now because I'm hardly ever outside the non-diabetic blood glucose range. I like my levels to be always in the 5s 2 hours after eating...

    Missed morning dose

I take 1 x 500mg 3 times a day and never have any problems if I miss one. Maybe you were being more aware of how you felt because you knew you'd missed the dose? Try not to worry :D Viv 8)

    What do you think?

I get my honey from local hobby beekeepers. I eat very little of it, because it's a sugary carbohydrate, but I have found that a teaspoon added to a Lemsip has no effect on my BGs whatsoever - which surprised me, not only for the honey! I also sometimes sweeten a serving of natural yoghurt...

    G.P.s

Hi Fozy! I too get copies of all my test results from the surgery - they were surprised I asked, but no problems! They're used to me now. I fast for at least 12 hours before all my blood tests, just in case, and I book them well ahead so I get the first appointment in the morning...

Type 2's: What was your fasting blood glucose in a morning?

Re: Type 2's : What was your fasting blood glucose in a morn I slept really heavily last night, didn't wake up until 08:30, and didn't manage to drag myself out of bed until gone 9! Consequently I too have had a small liver dump - was 5.7 when I eventually checked, which is high for me these...

    Leg cramps & Metformin?

What happens if you put your feet up on the sofa? Have you tried lying down on your bed during the day to see if it still happens then? If it is related to your back, maybe it's something to do with your sleeping position? Maybe try the tonic water before bed, just to see? Just a few thoughts...
