    Breakfast so difficult

One day, for breakfast, before I die: Easy on the stomache, heavy on the wallet.

Bored stiff of drinking water. Suggestions, please ...

I drink diet tonic water or diet lemonade with the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon, in both cases, ice cold. Green teas are next on the list, green tea with jasmine being a favourite. The comes coffee, freshly ground and brewed. Ice cold still tap water then seems quite a refreshing change.

    Confused and upset please advise

It takes time Trudy. It was 12 - 16 weeks before I started to see any readings that were normal at all and 26 weeks before most were normal. It was nearly a full year before they were all normal. You have to learn about foods and about your body and how it reacts and your body too needs to...

Try green aspargus! According to that chart, you could have a rare genetic disease. From now on, I shall eat only white asparagus !!

I half lived on it when I was first diagnosed. It's a bit chewy but with some meat and a veggie sauce and herbs or spices, you can make lots of interesting dishes, from curries to mediterranean type meals. It's low carb and low calorie yet very filling.

What did our parents do in the war?

My dad ended up working in the Courts Martial office in germany after the 2nd war, around 1947. He had some tales to tell. One was of a british NCO who had spent the entire war in an army prison in Egypt because he'd been caught selling british army trucks to the arabs. On his release, he was...

What did our parents do in the war?

The Salvation Army and the YMCA were very active at the front in the first war, providing the men with hot meals at reasonable prices. Egg and chips were favourite and made a welcome change to army rations. Conditions could be a bit grim though: Places like Talbot House or Toc H in...

It's also known as parboiled and I think Uncle Bens is sold as quick cook but the brown rice variety takes 25 mins so it isn't quick cook at all. You can tell by looking at the calories. Brown rice or white rice is about 300 kcals per 100g. Converted rice is about 100kcals. Morrisons have...

What did our parents do in the war?

My father was only 12 when the war broke out but his father had been in the first war from 1916 til 1921. He spent the three years after the armistice digging for the missing. 'Gruesome work' he said, but he got an extra ration of 2 pints of rum, one before breakfast, to make it easier. He...

Of the more readily available starches, pearl barley, which can also be used as a rice substitute, converted brown rice, wholegrain pasta such as Buitoni's and Blue Dragon wholewheat noodles are all usually OK. If you lower the portion sizes, say 60 g of converted brown rice, you'll have a still...

    Newcastle diet

The objective includes a reduction in liver and pancreatic trigs. It's not just a reduction in carbohydrate consumption. Taylor is very clear on this: "A clear distinction must be made between weight loss that improves glucose control but leaves blood glucose levels abnormal and weight loss of...

Controlling HBA1c with diet and exercise

I ate my fair share of mince pies but generally, I find these things too sweet now. My big downfall though is cheese. Because it is generally OK for BG levels, you get lulled into a false sense of security. If you eat any carbs at all, you have to watch cheese. Trouble is after half a bottle of...

Controlling HBA1c with diet and exercise

Yes I should have probably made it clear that I am not on any meds at all and started as soon as I was diagnosed. It is completely different to someone who has had type 2 diabetes undiagnosed for a long period of time. The level of damage to the beta cell mass can be very different between...

Controlling HBA1c with diet and exercise

Thanks for the encouragement but, my triglyceride levels have risen sharply and this is an indicator of what will follow if I continue to eat as I have done. The trig levels are a rough proxy for what is going on in your liver and pancreas. It's not a direct relationship but if they remain high...

    Newcastle diet

Roy Taylor who led the study points out that it is the amount of weight loss that is important, not the speed at which you lose the weight. He states, any regime which will allow you to lose enough weight will suffice. In fact, he says it is probably better to do so more slowly because that way...

Controlling HBA1c with diet and exercise

When I was diagnosed a couple of years ago, I started a regime of weight loss, improved diet and daily exercise. I lost 17% of my weight, became more active and returned to normal BG levels. The interesting question became, were the improved BG levels temporary or permanent? Was I producing more...

I was diagnosed just before Christmas a couple of years ago and have too been controlling it with diet and exercise. Firstly, lots and lots of people wonder if every ache, pain, cough, sneeze, lack of energy, bout of breathlessness etc etc is due to diabetes. The answer is mostly no. The sort...

    packed lunches

Depends on brand of course but Lidl's Rivercote is about 15g total carbs per slice. Of that, 4g is fibre and is not digested. The wholegrain kernels also contain a high percentage of oligosaccharides which are only partially digested, most of it being broken down by bacteria in the lower...
