Intermittent fasting alongside LCHF. Mutual support, anyone?

So I switched to LCHF over the course of January, and the past couple of weeks have added some fasting as well. I am determined now to maintain my weight at a much lower level, and if it is humanly possible, to put my type 2 diabetes into remission and keep it there. Neither of these will be...

    Definition of Dawn Phenomenon

My BG typically starts rising around 4-5am - when I’m still asleep. It continues to rise after I get up, more so if I do resistance exercises rather than swimming. My only question is what I should give as my “fasting glucose” number if asked. Is it what my Libre Freestyle shows in the depths...

    Share Your Progress!

OK, I’m signing in here to share my progress towards better control…. hopefully remission, but the odds seem stacked against that. I’ve had T2D for 26 years. Secondary to having binge eating disorder/obesity for most of my life - not an easy combination. In 2012/13 I lost over 7 stone and...

Newcastle Diet - currently 15 months in

I hope you don’t mind if I ask a few sneaky questions. Had you tried to lose weight before? If so, by what method? Why do you think that didn’t stick, but this did? Did you continue to lose weight after you finished the 12 week programme? Have you needed to go back on the shakes at all, or...

    Remission

Fantastic - well done. Don’t be surprised if your HbA1C rises slightly off the metformin, but it should only be a few points at most - not enough to get you even into prediabetic range. As long as you keep the weight off, that is. I speak as one who was there briefly but rebounded.

I don’t care about the mechanism as long as it works

@AndBreathe Yes, I meant you. With a history of anorexia, I imagine weighing is best avoided. I also have a history of disordered eating, but in my case it is binge eating disorder. Suffice it to say that my relationship with food and weight is tortured, to say the least. Been living with it...

I don’t care about the mechanism as long as it works

Thank you again. You say you didn’t set out to trim up….. have you ever deliberately tried to lose weight? I have, many times. I think that makes a difference psychologically at the very least. Maybe physiologically as well, I don’t know.

I don’t care about the mechanism as long as it works

Oh, thank you. That’s kind of the conclusion I was coming to. it’s several years since I first came across Taylor’s work, and to be honest, when I did, I was very angry with him. Because of his emphasis on low calorie without mentioning carbs and the low cal diet shakes thing. Why does that...

I don’t care about the mechanism as long as it works

It doesn’t assume all T2’s are fat. He gives examples of people who had BMI’s in the normal range, with T2 - who were found to also have fat deposited within their liver and pancreas. He suggested they try losing some weight (about 10%) and the diabetes resolved. As a result of this, he now...

    Hunger

When you do low carb, you get a lot of calories from fat. As long as it’s minimally processed (so not highly processed seed oils or trans fats) then it’s fine. I use mainly olive oil and butter. Fat carries flavour and is highly satiating.

I don’t care about the mechanism as long as it works

I’ve had T2 for more than 25 years, currently on metformin and Trulicity. Over 10 years ago I lost a ton of weight and got off all medication, and HbA1C stayed in the prediabetic range for a few months. Unfortunately I couldn’t keep it up. About 8 years ago I tried again with LCHF, then keto...

Feeling despondent, not sure what to do.

A further update…. my previous on 20th Feb about the rise in BG having peaked was a bit previous, as it did go up some more….. but it is now definitely starting to come down (7-day average BG moving down, time in range going up), and I have started losing weight again. I haven’t done anything...

Feeling despondent, not sure what to do.

I have some in the past, but not this time round. Have been thinking about it. It‘s not as simple as just not eating when you’re providing food for someone else, though.

Feeling despondent, not sure what to do.

A quick hopeful update…. average glucose (as measured by Libre Freestyle over past 7 days) has not risen any more since Saturday. OK - hasn’t gone down….. but also hasn’t gone up. Previously it had gone up every single day for the past 10 days. So maybe, maybe, it has found its peak and will...

Feeling despondent, not sure what to do.

What I originally wanted was to avoid having to add a third medication. My HbA1C had gone from 56 (not great) to 71 (terrible) in a year - and the only material change was the addition of the statin. I hadn’t changed diet, exercise, or weight over that time. So stopping the statin could reverse...

Feeling despondent, not sure what to do.

I was perfectly happy on metformin and Trulicity. I was well on the way to controlling my BG on those, after getting off that pigging statin, without adding empagliflozin - but then Trulicity became unavailable. If I have to replace Trulicity with empagliflozin, then I guess I do. I just...

Feeling despondent, not sure what to do.

I AM eating low carb, just not very low carb (keto). I’m not eating major starches (bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, cakes, biscuits etc), or anything with added sugar as a rule. No fruit juices, smoothies or soft drinks. With fruits, I’m limiting it to lower sugar ones, such as berries and pears...

Feeling despondent, not sure what to do.

I thought Rybelsus was only available to people who had been on an injectable semaglutide, whereas Trulicity is dulaglutide - related, but not identical. Still, worth asking the question!
