    Diabetes affecting smear test results?

Hi Jenni, I was diagnosed last summer and before I had a smear test in Sept I asked my GP if the diabetes could affect it. She said no, but my smear test came back as borderline (been having smears for years and always had a normal result). Lots of worry and waiting to have another smear but...

    Lower Carb Potatoes

Hi guys, Came across this research which may be of interest to those experimenting with foods and post prandial readings. I avoid potatoes myself but may try a homemade vinegary potato salad to see if it works for me... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16034360 xx

sorry - not been online for ages, but .........

Hi Caroline, Sorry to hear that you are having such a hard time. Could be entirely unrelated to your situation but I take temazapam before visiting the dentist (big scaredy cat!) and since diagnosis I've been twice and both times the temazapam raised my blood glucose by a whopping 3 - 4 points...

    Sudden change

Hi Ben, Your GP is your best bet but you may wish to call NHS 24 or your diabetic nurse, particularly if you feel unwell. I was told to do this if my sugars went over 16 at anytime. I think this is because they are watching for slow developing type 1 in my case. Other factors might be: - Do...

    Colds...

Hi guys, I've had a cold for the past couple of days and it seems much, much worse than anything I've had before - sinus, neck pain, couple of faints and my nose is dripping uncontrollably (sorry!). Just back from the chemist where they recommended sudafed. The pharmacist sat me down with a...

    vitamin b12

P.S Cuglia - on the list you posted only meat and dairy sources (and some fortified cereals etc) contain B12. Some long term vegetarians and most vegans end up short of B12 - particularly if they avoid breakfast cereals/soya milk fortified with vitamins. There's more info here...

    vitamin b12

Hi guys, I have a slight B12 deficiency (should be between 200 - 900 ng/l blood and mine was 193). Was prescribed B12 shots by the GP. Some people don't have something called 'intrinsic factor' or have developed antibodies to this and cannot absorb B12 from food or supplements - hence the...

    Mulberry Extract (Zuccarin)

Hi all, In a health shop this morning my friend spotted a supplement called zuccarin - mulberry extract. The packaging states "improves postprandial glucose tolerace" and "helps maintain a healthy blood sugar level after meals and helps reduce absortion of sugars and starch". Has anyone tried...

Carb Count for Bijoux Verts Lentils

Hi there, You might want to try channa dal - a form of chickpeas. I get fantastic results with this stuff. There's info here: http://mendosa.com/chanadal.html (last updated 29 Oct 2009) and an earlier thread here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=11011 xx

    desperate to lose weight

Hi Chrissie, I've lost too much weight but... I've found that making sure you move after eating anything (even walking round the block, cleaning the bath/shower vigarously etc) helps. Avoiding food in the evening while watching tv, on the computer etc also helps some folk. xxx

    Echinacea

Hi all, Feel a cold coming on and my blood sugar is a bit higher than usual. I'd usually take echinacea, which works for me, but is it ok for diabetics? Can't find anything much online and nothing on the bottle. Thanks! Lizzie xx

    A Confession...

Hi all, Feeling guilty and in shock so sharing the guilt... just went to the corner shop for a can of diet juice and came back with a snickers duo bar  which I have eaten. Both bars. Feel sick , dizzy and ever so ashamed. I don't even like snickers bars or milk chocolate. In fact, I...

    Birthday Drinks....

Hi Tracy, Since diagnosis I've found I get drunk on only one or two small glasses of wine. One effect you might want to test for is that dry wine (white or red) lowers my blood sugar and offsets the effect of a bigger meal than usual or one with higher carbs (e.g a bit or rice/popadom with a...

    A diabetic christmas.

Re: Porridge, sugar and brandy! Unless you're low carbing a small bowl of porridge is ok. You could try using the new Brown Splenda instead of sugar. There's also 'perfect sweet' - a xyilitol sweetener that I use for baking etc. The brandy... well it's only one day of the year! xx
