    Fish and Chips

There is quite a lot of carbohydrate in a chippie bought fish and chips, about 70 to 110 grams dependent upon size of portion. Thos of us with Type 1 who carb count can adjust our insulin dose to cope with the carbs , but I would advise that you have smaller portions if you are type 2...

    Difficulty getting a pump

It took me several years of trying to persuade my Diabetes team to let me go on a Pump, I had met the NICE criteria all that time, even getting a number of complications (Eyes and legs) before switching to my local hospital (had gone to Good Hope in Sutton originally as they diagnosed me) and...

    Skipping a meal

Are you on MDI or mixed insulin? (MDI is where you have 2 insulin types having one before bed/in the morning (long acting), and then the other with each meal(rapid acting) If the former, then skipping the occasional meal should not cause too many problems, just be sure to check your blood to...

    Terrified

Hi Martin, Like you I had poor glycaemc control for a long time, (My worst HbA1C was 15.1% :o ) but I drastically improved my control over the last year or so, so that my HbA1C is now 7.6% and going down. I have pains in my legs almost continually but having spoken to my GP and diabetes team, I...

    Work Christmas party

Hi Chokoholic, Do you Carb count? If so it would be best to await each course and inject just prior to each one with the insulin required for that course only. (Don't do it in the toilets though, too much bacteria) If you are on fixed doses, the best time would be just before the main course...

    Differences

As has been said, Type 1 diabetics have a non-functioning pancreas which doesn't produce any insulin, thus they require injections of insulin to survive. Type 2 Diabetics have a fully functional pancreas that produces a normal amount of insulin but their body is resistant to the effects that...

    Changing Shifts at Work

Hi all, I work in a local Spar shop to where I live, I'm a supervisor (after being there over 8 years :o ) and have just been asked if I can start running the Sunday evening shift. I've been working the mornings on Sundays for the last 7 years as my main job is being the store's News Manager...

who's had the pump? and what's it like..

I have a pump too, and I wouldn't give it up for anything. Started on it in July and have lowered my HbA1c by 2% (at least) since then. I can eat what ever I want (or not as the case may be) and I feel soooooo much better.

Got Insulin Pump! It is so awesome!

Hi John, Welcome to the pump club. I have had mine since the summer and it has been the most wonderful thing I've ever had. It takes a while to get the setting "spot on" but once you do things are even better. Lucy, I have the Medtronic Paradigm Veo, it is a wonderful pump with a 1.8ml...

How much carb to raise blood sugar hypo and non hypo?

I go by the rule of 15, 15g of FAST acting carbs followed by a test in 15 minutes (if hypo) this could be check when not hypo to see how it affect you I suppose but I'd rather not just have random carbs unless it was with a proper meal. I've only passed out once when really low (1.2) but...

    Storing pump insulin

My vials last just over a week maybe two and once opened stay at room temperature as I was told by the Pump educator that if I keep it in the fridge I'd get air bubbles in the set if I just loaded the insulin straight into it without it being at room temperature. I get a new vial out about a day...

How long have you been diagnosed?

Twelve years, mostly with poor control due to lack of any communication with my Diabetes team. Much better now with insulin pump. Been on that since July and feel much better for it.

    Ketones

I test for Ketones if my BG has been over 15 for 3 or more tests (usually with an hour between each test) as recommended by my DSN, I've had full blown DKA a few times in the past so know how quickly it can come on, at the time I had no method of testing for Ketones, either blood or Urine, now I...

    Diabetes - Anger

I tend to lose my temper more easily if I'm going low, it's about the only Adrenal response I get at the moment, so even if I don't know I'm going low, others do. When my BGs are normal I have much greater control of my Temper and can calm myself down within seconds of being angered. If I'm high...

Type 1 - Is it genetic?

My family has a long history of Diabetes, both T1 and T2, my Maternal Great Grand mother was T1, so was my Nan (Mother's Mother) I have an Aunt and Uncle with T1 on my Mother's side, I believe that there was a T1 on my Father's side but not too sure. I myself was diagnose just before my 18th...

    Medtronic paradigm veo

I use the VEO, along with the Contour Link meter, this is the only meter that wirelessly links to the Medtronic pumps but is absolutely brilliant, I use it in combination with my other meter (A Glucomen LX plus for the ketone use) and always before a meal so that the Bolus wizard on the pump can...

the veo pump or the omnipod?

Can I give a view from a VEO user please? I've been using the VEO since July, yes you have the tubing and Canula as separate parts, but this is not too much of a problem, especially if you put the canula in your leg then clip the pump onto your trouser waist band. You don't have to do any maths...
