    Nhs Heart Age

I am worried about the NHS Heart Age tool at: https://www.nhs.uk/Tools/Pages/heartage.aspx I am 62 and it gives me a heart age of 81. Can this be correct? I have Type 2 diabetes, I am slightly overweight BMI 26.4, and I take one blood pressure pill (Losartan). Are these adverse factors really...

    Diabetic life expectancy

Is there any validity in the extract below which quotes Dr. Brett Osborn? http://www.mypalmbeachpost.com/news/lifestyles/can-diabetes-drug-metformin-extend-your-life/nphYp/ " ... five-year study that was published in the medical journal “Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism,” “Researchers...

    Diabetic Retinopathy >>> fenofribrate

I read on a Birmingham patient website (that I cannot now find) that all patients with retinopathy should be given fenfibrate in addition to a statin. That seems to be supported by academic sites. Tomorrow I have my visit to the diabetic nurse and will get a smack if I tell her that I have been...

Today's email from diabetes.co.uk reads "NHS cutting T2 costs"

It's an emotive headline in the all member email. Is that planted there purely to raise attention? There is no corresponding article in the email and by a search I can find no such article. What is this all about?

Type 2 >>> your visits to the diabetic nurse >>> do HbA1c readings follow body weight?

For me, there is almost a perfect correlation between HbA1c and body mass. My lowest weight gave the lowest HbA1c and my highest weight gave the highest HbA1c. Everything in between follows the same pattern. Are your experiences the same?

    Accuracy of scales

I bought some Seca 760 scales a couple of years ago: described as "... precision and quality assured ... exceptional accuracy ...". The digital floor scales in the diabetic nurses' room add several kilograms to the Seca reading. I checked against the 50p per go local pharmacy scales today and...

GlucoRX Meter >>> Type 2 >>> annual scheme

The scheme is worth looking at but "double glazing" style selling undermines all confidence. Email of a few days ago says they only have free 175 meters left. Presumably, they have none left today. Do competitors offer similar scheme without the crude marketing?

    Retinopathy screening >>> eye drops

My optometrist (Susan Bowers in Coventry) tells me that eye drops are only necessary when older instrumentation is used. I can therefore have the necessary tests without drops. This means having a free NHS eye test and paying £15 extra for the photography and consultation. That saves having...

Metformin >>> does anyone have an authoratitive definition of "short acting"?

A poster in an earlier thread suggests, "reaching its peak in about an hour and lasting about 4 to 5 hours". Upon searching Google (metformin +"short acting"), I cannot find any confirmation of this suggested definition. Any ideas, please?

    Daily aspirin

Through reading a lot of press articles over the years, I came to the conclusion that taking a 70 mg daily aspirin was on the balance of risks a good idea. The pharmacist at Sainsbury in Coventry, however, bluntly refused to sell me any. I then picked up four packets of 28 aspirins two metres...

    What is a cup?

From Fatsecret: 1 cup of blueberries contains 21g of carb On the other hand, 100 g of blueberries contains about about 15 g of carb Presumably, a cup measures volume. How big is a cup? For instance is a plastic glass of the size dispensed by a drinks machine bigger or smaller than a cup...

    Codefree strips again

One thing I have noticed is that the Codefree strips meter at higher values with greater air exposer. The longer the pot is kept (and repeatedly opened and closed) the greater the exposure to air. I took five strips from an opened pot and five strips from a new pot (both from the same...

Do blood glucose readings follow calorie burn?

I am almost sure that my readings track exercise intensity. Readings are high in the morning where there has been low calorie burn during sleep hours. With low exercise during the morning the readings fall. Then with intense swimming (840 cals /seesion) later in the day, it falls further. It...
