all is not well

Yes a disappointment but two weeks will pass quite quickly and hopefully it will all go well.

I have an appointment with a respiratory consultant next month it seems the breathing tests I underwent the other week show that the covid pneumonia has done a bit of damage and my lung capacity is now reduced.

Aw! So sorry about that.
maybe, they will give you some thing to ease your breathing, new lungs, new chest, new body maybe, have you given a thought on which model you want, make sure you point out it's got to have better wear and tear, a bit more resilient to the life you want to have. You might get a chance to test run it.
In all seriousness, my wife has COPD, her cabinet is full of inhalers, nebulizers, contraptions but they do help. Mention your diabetes. No quack medication full of sugars!

All went smoothly at the hospital. I am going in to the respiratory ward tomorrow, for 4 - 5 days. My left lung is full of fluid, and part of my right one. They are going to drain them gradually, and then be able to do the CT scans etc. I just got back and feel in a daze. The consultant said she doesn't, yet, know what is going on, but it is usually related to cancer somewhere. I feel strangely relieved that they are talking over my care

Any tips on what to take tomorrow are welcome.

Well that’s a mixed bag of news. Great that they will be helping you and doing the scans you need. Worrisome about the potential causes. I’m crossing all I’ve got it’s related to the ongoing pneumonia and nothing worse.

pj’s, shower gear and dressing gown. Comfy easy clothes if you want to get dressed and out of bed. A hoodie or similar to sit up in bed with over pj’s. Phone, tablet, charger and the longest leads you have or a battery pack if the leads are short. Books. If you have long hair something to tie it up and prevent serious bedhead. Anything that helps you sleep, earphones etc
 
So sorry you've not had better news, but am glad they're going to drain the fluid and do the scans. No wonder you've not been able to breathe properly. Hope the staff are kind, and am praying that it's not cancer.

I'd take some food in with you, and snacks that you like/can eat. Tissues, slippers, a pillow (they never have enough in our hospital!!)
 
Sending you much love Lucy, it’s a tough and worrying time for you, but as you say you are now in their care and for all our moaning our health care is second to none and they will take good care of you and get you well again. X
 
Thank heavens they are taking your symptoms seriously.

As to practicalities
Morrisons and other supermarkets do packs of olives in packets which don't need refrigeration. Hard boiled eggs will last a couple of days without refrigeration, as does dark chocolate (what an excuse :) ), pork scratchings, nuts, cheese in a tupperware so you don't stink the ward out.

Perhaps also treat it as a mini spa break, take nail polish, nice face and hand creams, manicure stuff, fancy magazines, light reading, music and podcasts, good earphones, a splash of perfume
And listen to your body, it will probably just want to sleep. You've been under a huge amount of stress and illness and it will probably just want to rest.

And, most importantly, some way of keeping us up to date!!!

Mixed bag of new @lucylocket61 , but again, at least you are moving forward to knowledge and solutions.

I'd agree on the phone and tablet if you have one, charges and something to amuse yourself. One advantage of being an inpatient is they can rapidly get lots of tests and examinations done.

Take with you anything that makes you happy, whether that be perfume, knitting, books or sewing.

Every best wish for you and try to let us know how your getting along.

Plenty of underwear, Night gear, Tissues, Comb and or brush. Avocados, eggs and nuts. Anything that smells nice. Flannel.
I suspect you will need to rest quite a lot. Oh and don't forget the toothbrush and toothpaste.
 
a small tin of Vaseline is good to have for just inside your nose. Odd, I know, but if they have to prescribe you oxygen at any time during your stay then the inside of the nose dries out really quickly and becomes uncomfortable or the skin can dry so much inside the nose you get a nose bleed. I little bit of Vaseline helps loads. They use it for ICU patients on oxygen but don’t always have it for patients on respiratory wards. Good luck. Im glad they are taking your symptoms seriously but it is such a worrying time for you. x

Doing a google search on the meaning of 'peaked cap' was a bit disappointing.
Picture below shows what I guessed it was (well, it's a cap and it has a high peak, right?) and I think it would be an amazing look in hospital, @lucylocket61 , nice change from your usual aluminium one!

Happy they'll take care of your shortness of breath and give you a break from dealing with everything yourself, crossing fingers, toes and eyes for the cause though.

Peaks on caps for you @Antje77, it's the bit that shades your eyes and nose.


Here's a Dutch fisherman peaked hat, I used to have denim one of these I aquired many years ago.

Take a spare pair of reading glasses. Mine broke, and it was three days before someone could visit and bring me another pair. Three days without being able to read was not helpful, especially as two of them were over a weekend when I didn't see any medical staff.

Lucy I'm so sorry to hear of what you are going through , you may have read my post on here regarding my wife's prognosis which is similar to your own it is terrible waiting for the results , she has now started treatment and it does seem like we are now thinking better and feeling a bit more positive , time is a healer and you will feel better as you accept what is happening , hugs from us both we do feel for you .
