Hi ive been told i have type 2 prediabetes and been put on metformin.Managed to lose 2 stone and my blood sugar has come down from 10.4 to 8.4 percent so going ok.With all the restrictions on carb intake would trying The Atkins diet for a month help?Seems to me the allowed and resticted foods are quite similar.Been on the Atkins years ago and it did work but gave you bad breath and constipation and you cant be on it more than a month. Was thinking along the lines of a short term thing.
Hi Tommy58 and welcome
Atkins is basically a straighforward low carb/keto diet, and works (short answer) by restricting carb intake so that the body produces glucose from body fat instead of digesting it from carbs. This reduces both blood glucose levels and bodyfat.
I did a couple of goes of Atkins successfully years ago and lost a lot of weight. It looks like I was already diabetic then (though undiagnosed) so when I reintroduced carbs the fat reappeared very quickly.
I was eventually diagnosed in 2019 and have been on around 20g carb a day for almost all of the time since. It's basically what I was doing on Atkins: meat, eggs, dairy, fish, some green veg. I've found that it is perfectly sustainable, for at least the five years I've been doing it. Bad breath - no (my wife is a demon for that sort of thing): constipation: - a little, but nothing like the constipation I had while my BG was out of normal range.
Best of luck
