Hi Stevie,
I am on several meds and a low dose of atorvastatin/day. Metformin was mentioned recently by an endo so I would not think there is any problems.
Just google the two meds and query if there is a conflict.
regards
D.

The specialist diabetes nurse at my practice wanted me to start statins and this is the one she gave me. I read the information in the pack and was concerned as it said it could raise blood sugar. Queried it with the doctor and was told it was fine. Must admit I am not entirely convinced

Sometimes atorvastatin can be tolerated when simvastatin cannot. It is essential your doctor puts you on the lowest dose to get the desired effect.
Half a 10 mg (c.5mg) tablet works for me and brought my total chloresterol down to 3.5.

thats exactly why i posted this question, i take 1 tablet of met formin first thing in the mornings and one at 9 pm at nite along with the astorvastatin and when i check my blood sugar before bed it has risen, i eat nothing after teatime and at 9 pm before taking the tablets my sugar reading is usuall between 5.2 and 6, but around 11.30 after taking the statin it rises to about 8.5, then i read that the statin isnt suitable for diabetics and infact can cause diabetes type 2, my gp told me it was a very safe tablet, strange

It's confusing! I don't have a lot of confidence in the advice the medical profession give diabetics. I'm new to monitoring my sugar levels as I was told it wasn't necessary. The fluctuations are alarming me. I would prefer it to stay the same! When I queried the need for the statins, the doctor said all diabetics needed them. I am sure that's not the case.

I'm on this too I was told when you are diagnosed with diabetes high cholesterol can occur so they start you on atvorstatin as a prevention

Question is why your GP feels you need to take a statin. What does you cholesterol breakdown look like? Are you diagnosed with a cardiac condition or had a heart attack for example?

There is a big difference on opinion as to the benefits of statins.
No one doctor will prescribe it because of just being diabetic.
Not one doctor should prescribe it unless your personnel risk factor is over a cerain limit due to your current and familial history.

I was prescribed atoravastatin, when I didn't need it and after three weeks because of side effects, I, with my GPs consent agreed to stop them.

I believe, unless certain medical conditions supersede diet, then diet is the best way to lower cholesterol and control blood glucose levels.

Statins should only be prescribed for what they were designed for and not for diabetes..

I was prescribed statins when first diagnosed (because all diabetics took them!!!) But my hba1c went up from 48 to 54. I came off them due to other side effects and my hba1c is now down to 36. At my first diabetes check when my hba1c had increased I told the DN that I'd read that statins can increase blood sugar but was told not to believe all I read in the papers - her face was a picture when I told her I'd read it on the manufacturers' own website as being highlighted as a potential side effect!

Hi Totto my cholesterol was 6.1, i went into hostpital 11 years ago to have a tare in my retina repaired and they found that i had high blood pressure, ive been on meds for that ever since then 2 years ago i started to get problems like burning in my fingers and toes and blurred vision from time to time and crawling sensations on my face so i went for a check up, on 5 different occasions at my gp surgery i tested negative for diabetes but my blood sugar was elevated at 47, which the doctor said was a little high but nothing to worry about, i asked to be refered to the hostpital to get tests done and that test showed my blood sugar at 48 and they diagnosed me as diabetic type 2, and told to take 1000 mgs of metformin, 500 in the mornings and 500 at night, then my cholesterol test showed up at 6.1 so he put me on the statin, my gp said all men that turn 50 and over should really be on them anyhow,

I'm 60, and I don't need them.

I wouldn't have argued with your GP, three years ago.
That is because all my vital signs were not good. My familial risk is high and being diagnosed as diabetic gave me a high risk factor.
But since my misdiagnosis and a low carb diet has not only improved all my vital signs back to normal and I have lost a lot of weight but I'm so healthy, that statins are so unnecessary even though the GPs keep trying.

The only thing that you can do is avoid them as much as possible, you can probably have a small portion of them there baddies, but reducing your carbs is essential to getting control.

If you haven't got a meter, get one because, how do you know what's spiking you and what's not!

Yes those bad boys, spuds, rice, bread etc certainly had me all over the place!
