Blood Glucose Advice

The crackers and oatcakes are not good.
Full fat yoghurt is better.


I was eating full fat yoghurt, it had 12g per 109g sugar. The DN told me not to eat anything over 5g per 100g (that converts to sugar), I looked around my supermarket and this was the only thing I could find that fit the description

Sorry, bloody pads just thrown the post out in gobbledeegook.

No need to worry you are doing fine. Just have a look at the carbs, if the carb count per hundred grams is over five, don't have it.

Keep looking at the recipes and at all the diets and find one that suits you.

Re meat, I'd read that protein turns to sugar, so best of replacing with fat? When I stArted to cut the carbs down originally, I didn't replace it with anything, so my calorie intake dropped to about 700 per day, and I lost 8 lbs in 3 weeks. I am my right weight now, and don't want to lose any more, so I've tried replacing with fat to make up the calories.

Meat is a protein and doesn't contain carbs. It is the one type of food that I can eat all day without my blood levels going up. You are probably mixing them up with calories. Get yourself reading the forum, you seem to have been given the wrong info.

Which sugars is the crucial one, but all carbs convert to sugar. Myself, carbs are a poison to me and I have to stay away from them. I only get my carbs from low GI fruit and veg. You have to have them, but not many and the fat you eat converts what you need.
 
I've read recently that eating protein with carbohydrate will slow down the absorption of the carbohydrate. I've been dabbling with a low carb diet of late and my blood sugars are about 6. I'm not without my hypos though. They are inevitable :)

Take roughly 1gram protein/kg body weight and that is actually not as easy to do as it seems. The protein is important building block don't try to cut them out. yes some glucose but nothing that will mater in the scheme of things. Agree with full fat yogurt they take out fat and add sugar.
 
Cream contains less sugar than milk. So I'm guessing that full fat dairy products are better if you're keeping your carb intake to a minimum. I found that cow's milk raised my blood sugar a lot, so I've switched to unsweetened Soya milk now. Much less sugar.:)

There are many dietary advice on here and elsewhere. You have to find what makes you happy, and what you are happy eating. Any carbs make me feel ill, unless I take my meds. A lot of diabetics can eat carbs of various GI levels. You can mix your intake and many recipes involve plenty of variation like in soups etc. I eat plenty of protein and salads. Keep looking at the advice on the forum under the headings in the search box.

Why do you get hypos?
 
I stopped the milk. But all the "normal" full fat yoghurts I have looked at all seemed to have a minimum of 9 grams per 100 carbs that converts to sugar. I even looked at Greek yoghurt but that didn't seem any better. The only ones I can find that have 5g per 100 or less is ACTIMEL 0% & Flora yoghurt. Can anyone suggest any brand names to look at?

I don't get hypos but I am trying to keep my levels to as close to normal as possible and not for them to spike

It is the total carbs that count. not the sugar part. All carbs turn into sugar.

Unfortunately, I've just been told by my doctor to take 10 units of novorapid per meal. Sometimes I think that maybe a bit too much and I usually have one hypo per day. I would love to be able to count carbs and work out the correct insulin dosage, but the doctor didn't seem keen when I asked him about it.

I've just googled soya yoghurt, I've found one that has 10g of sugar per 100g, another that's 9.5g, there's only one that shows 2.3g but you have to buy it by the bucket load! The one I have is 3.3 g per 100 g

Does it mention that it is unsweetened? I used to use Soya yoghurt a few years ago and that was unsweetened. But I know a lot of companies that add sugar to Soya products to make it taste nicer. It can be very annoying, can't it?

It is total carbs that matters. not just sugar.
