I never had an issue with BP until recently…. Had a 24 hour monitor and was sent straight to hospital
They monitored me, told me BP was fine and said meds would lower it too much
Currently have another 24 hour monitor and if high again will probably want to put me on meds but I was told if I start them I can never come off them?
Is that true?

Yes and NO..

I was on 5 medications for BP 15 or so years ago I had so many side effects that I stopped and my BP stayed practically the same without the bp meds so it is possible to stop

And I was fine for about 9 years with only very slightly raised BP

That all started to change about 3 years ago when my BP shot up

However everyone is different so how one reacts may not be the same as the next

If also been aware of people being told to stop because BP too low

Hi @mack76 , yes I'm on Ramipril HCTZ 5/12.5 mg. I'm fine on it, but my brother had to come off them as it made him cough. He's on another one now, I don't know which one.

My BP can go low on them, especially when I'm laying down, but I guess that would be the same on any BP med.

@searley I came off mine too, for a couple of years, but my BP started to rise again.
Actually @mack76 this may interest you. One morning, which I will never forget, I tested my BP, it was slightly raised so I tested it a few minutes later to see if it had normalized. It hadn't, in fact it was higher. So I tested it several more times. My BP went higher and higher. So high in fact I became very concerned. So I called 811 health line (that's the Canadian health line #) and spoke to the nurse. She asked me to test it again while I was on the line, it was like 160/110. She called an ambulance. I was then carted off to hospital. I was taken straight to a bed, no waiting at all. I had heart monitors put on, BP monitor the whole nine yards. My BP came right down.

The Dr, who was Scottish, recalled a story from when he was a med student, this was a long time ago. Anyways, he told me that when he was at med school, doing the BP lesson they all tested their own BP. One of his fellow student's BP was raised. He then went on to tell me that they ribbed this poor guy so much about his raised BP, it went very high, no doubt from anxiety. It went so high he was admitted to the hospital and kept in overnight. The Dr said they all felt badly and it was anxiety, due to being ribbed about his BP, that had caused his BP to rise so dramatically. The Dr then told me that this is what had happened to me. I went back on my BP meds.

Hi there @mack76 , when the Dr first told me to go on BP meds I was apprehensive. I started on the Ramipril 5/12.5 mg I felt no different, apart from an annoying tickly cough, which went away after a couple of weeks. Basically, I didn't feel any different to when I wasn't taking them.

As far as my low bp episodes go, these are far and few between. I would go as far as to say that I wouldn't know it if I didn't check my bp (I have a bp monitor) My bp doesn't drop really low, just bumps along the low / normal threshold. Sometimes in the morning if I get up too quickly I feel a bit light headed, this light headedness is infrequent, but that is the worst of it. I certainly don't feel I'm going to pass out or anything like that.

I was put on Ramipril 5/12.5 in 2019. I am still on the same dose now. So long and short of it, I feel happy that my blood pressure is normal. I feel no different from when I was not on them . The very odd occasion my bp drops, I wouldn't even know it if I didn't check my bp.

I’m on a low dose BP to protect my kidneys, I have slightly leaky kidneys which is very stable, I’ve never had high BP, it sits around the 120/60 -70 mark. But have been as low as 104/60. I feel nothing from this and wouldn’t know what my BP is. I was on Ramipril but it gave me the cough that never went away. I stopped noticing it but it drove my hubby nuts lol. When I mentioned it to GP they changed me to Candesartan which I’ve got no side effects from at all

@mack76 , I can only talk about my own experience taking Ramipril, and really I felt no difference after taking it. I take mine first thing in the morning. That irritating little tickley cough I had, just went away.

I felt no difference when I was taking Ramipril (plus another 2 BP meds). Though they were prescribed even though my BP has always been in the normal range, but they were part of a bundle of meds given as standard to all Cardiovascular patients ( I needed a 3x bypass - though didn't have a 'heart attack'.
Soon came of them all with my GP's grudging acceptance.

I’ve had a number of blood pressure meds some had side effects others didn’t and not everyone gets them

Ramipril made my eyes really sensitive to wind could be very uncomfortable outside

The most common side effect is headaches and this is normally just the body getting used to the changes and goes away after a week or 2

If you get side effects you can not handle you can discuss with your gp as there are plenty others to try

That’s really interesting @searley - thinking back to the many years ago I was on it I experienced this but never put it down to the Ramipril. I used to have to wear glasses outside even on dull days. (I have glasses all the time now for sight but not then) I still have the slight problem but not anywhere near a bad because I do have a bit of dry eye now but very manageable and I don’t think it’s my BP tabs I’m on now as I had a few years in between without BP meds and I had the dry eye syndrome

The term "big boned" lol repeatedly told this growing up!
I have awful white coat syndrome. My GP accepts this and I just email the results from my home testing but it still goes high due to the anxiety but normalizes when I choose a really quiet time with headphones on! I was on Ramipril for 3 years before being diagnosed, my side effects were not good but everyone is different and seeing as I get health medication anxiety on top of daily life anxiety it did not help. I came off medication when I lost weight through diet and exercise and when my bp went too low, which caused different side effects. I used to take mine in the morning without fail. I did feel dizzy when I first started taking them, but I didn't get the "whooshy" feeling in my ears when I bent down/lay down when they kicked in after a few months. Best talk to a health care worker regarding the exercise, but my GP told me I wasn't going to keel over so exercise was good and it is for mental health too.
