Hi Perry @laynecobain welcome to the forum. How long have you been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes ? Do you have a diabetes doctor and nurse supervising your care. If it is really recent, it is a lot to try and get your head around so trying to just think one day at a time could help you get some peace of mind. I would also try to get a copy of the book Think Like A Pancreas if you can. There is a lot in the book that can help you to understand what is happening and steps you can take to help bring in some self confidence in treating the Diabetes.

Im Perry, 44 years old and from the Netherlands. Im diagnosed with type 1 and my blood sugar is out of control. My HBA1C is 120mmol/120mol. I don't know how to a grip on it. Im at my wits end.
Just a T2 here, so nowhere near in the same boat as you. But I have seen a couple of T1's and the like on here who couldn't get a handle on things either, until they went (moderately?) low carb in addition to their insulin regime. If there's less to inject for, management often becomes easier. Just don't over-do it, or you're having hypo's all over the place. I am going from the assumption though that you aren't on a fixed dose? Can you carb count and adjust dosages for meals?

Oy, @Antje77 , you keep an eye on carbs and shoot up, can you help? ;)

Anyway, Perry, welcome to the forum. It's always nice to have a few extra Dutchies here. :)

Hi @laynecobain

Welcome to the forum :)

Today is always a good day to start getting a handle on things, it would help to know more so what insulins are you using and what delivery system so injections/pump, also are you using a sensor or a glucose meter ?

Although we can speak from experience here we cannot give dosing advice, however support is guaranteed as we all get it. Hope to hear more from you.

Hi Perry, another welcome to the forum.

I see you've been a member for a couple of years so you're likely not new to diabetes. Have you known you're T1 from the start or did you get rediagnosed from T2 recently?
If it's a recent change in diagnosis and you've only started learning to adjust your insulin doses, that's something your diabetes nurse or internist should be able to help with, and things should get better pretty quickly.

If you've been treated as a T1 for couple of years already, something is not going right.
How do you decide on how much insulin (both basal and bolus) to take? What kind of guidance do you get from your diabetes nurse?

If you have been trying to get it right for years and it isn't working, there is the possibility of a revalidatietraject in Groningen, which can be very helpful for those who need it: https://www.umcg.nl/-/diabetesrevalidatie

And of course keep asking questions here, we're happy to share what works for us!

Having posted a reply to your message concerning numbness and tingling in the feet, this post gives me relevant information. I think you should seek medical advice on how best to manage your blood sugar. Once this improves, your feet stand a better chance. I had 20 years of poorly managed Type1 and, thanks to a superb hospital team, have good feeling in my feet even now, 46 years later. The thing is to deal with all this as soon as you can. High blood sugar readings in my case caused lethargy and apathy. As soon as I was read the Riot Act in 1979, life was so much better. I hope things improve soon.

The fact that you posted this is a great sign. It means that you are ready to do something about your situation. A lot of people just give up.

Keep reading this forum for more info and inspiration.

I highly recommend you read Dr. Bernstein’s book “Diabetes Solution”. I was on your same boat and it took a DKA trip to the hospital to make me realize that what i was doing was not working. I read a ton but Dr. B’s book changed my life. The first thing it gave me was knowledge about this disease which put me at ease, and then came the control. Now, it’s not magic, it does take a lot of work and dedication but unlike before when I was putting a lot of effort into my diabetes but got extremely frustrated because nothing worked, this time it was different. The work paid off. Life became a lot easier. I controlled T1, T1 did not control me anymore. Go read it, then you can teach your doctor a thing or two about how this disease works.
