Blurred Vision

Hi,

Diagnosed Type 2 last year (May ish)

Recently went for new glasses and on collection found my vision still blurred, I thought this was a mess up by the opticians so had a re-test and new perscription, however I find I still have blurred vision, not too bad normally but when I look at computer screens or try and read a paper I notice it the most.

I have a proper diabetic test booked on the 20th Jan

Other than that anyone had anything similar or advice etc.?

Cheers

Thanks Cugila,
Sorry to say no idea as I don't test and wasn't advised to test, I'm on 4xMetformin per day, other than that its diet

Cheers BB

I think in the circumstances you need to get a meter and test frequently for a few days at least. Blurred vision is a common symptom of hyperglycaemia....high blood glucose levels.

If they are high you may find that your glasses may not be any good again if you lower the levels. Basically high sugars changes the shape of your eyeball, so a reduction will change the shape again.

Get a tester and let us know what your readings are, on waking, before meals and 2 hrs after meals.

Your Optician should have asked if your Diabetes was well controlled before testing and prescribing glasses. Mine always does. Any adverse comments and the test doesn't get done !

Hi BB,

Elevated blood glucose can cause blurred vision. In the past when my bs were elevated for a pro-long period, I use to get blurry vision. Best you keep your appointment on the 20th Jan, as a diabetes check is quite thorough, just to rule out any other possible cause.

aaaah ok,

Shame the diabetic nurse didn't mention the eyball shape thingy and also shame the opticians didn't ask about my type 2 being stable

Ho Hum

Advice please on testers...
Recommended ones?
Where to buy (Pharmacie?)
Costs?

Thanks for the feedback most appreciated

Cheers

Hi again BB.
Sometimes this has to be the best place to get your information from. We pride ourselves in giving out the accurate and helpful information at all times. Not always in accordance with current medical advice as you might have noticed....however, most times it works for people !

Meters. They are personal really so it has to be what YOU prefer, compact, sturdy, funky, light etc. so many choices. You may be able to get a free meter from some of the meter manufacturers which are advertised on the Community pages here. A little tip is to tell them that you are testing around 6-7 times a day, they usually offer you everything including the kitchen sink as that is where they make their profits...the sale of strips ! :D

Here is a link to our own blood glucose monitors guide. Take a look.
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care ... guide.html

I used an Accu- Chek-Aviva for many years before changing to a Lifescan UltraSmart which is my current meter. I have a meter in the car which is a Bayer Breeze 2. I would recommend any of these, however it is personal choice. Might not suit you.

If you have to buy, you can get them online or just pop into a local High St Pharmacy. they should have a selection for you to look at. Don't forget that as a Diabetic these meters and the strips are exempt from VAT to you. Costs vary from just a few pounds to £20-30, dependent on the specifications. Strips if you can't get them prescribed are available on the internet, Ebay is a good source.

Here is the downloadable VAT exemption form from this site to take with you, not all Pharmacies are aware of this blanket exemption. So ASK for it and provide the form.

I use the Accu-Chek Nano, small, easy to use and gives average readings over a 7,14,30 and 90 day period. I have used many meters over the years, and this one is the best so far. I get my meter for free from my diabetes clinic, perhaps you could try this yourself? As I am type 1, I don't pay for test strips, but I read on another post that you can buy test strips for the nano from Tesco's for £14.99.

Hi SB.
Have your Bg numbers been normal ? Within normal readings for a T2 ? If they are then go ahead with the Optician. If they are at all elevated you could quite possibly be wasting your money and will need another pair as soon as your readings are OK. Did you read what I said about the eyeball changing shape in my previous post ?

Hi BB,
my blurred vision was actually caused by glucose permeating my lens!!. Once I reduced my BG's my vision restored to 20 20 !!!.

Regards Steve.

Hi cugila

I did see your other post regarding the eyeball, tbh was a bit shocked, then again I am getting a lot of shocks since coming on these forums and reading about diabetes.

As to my Bs levels, they started of at 26 to over the 30+ levels but thankfully since going on Metformin 500 Mg and Glicazide 80Mg my levels have slowly dropped and today at 1650 was 6.6

Congratulations on getting your bs down!

You still need to be careful testing 2 hours after meals to check that your readings are below 8.5 and that fasting is between 4 and 7.

If you can keep figures like this your eyesight should improve.

Hi, I had blured vision after i started on metformin and as i drive for a living and work for a boss who says ignore it and it will go away, oh yea if only, i was going to Specsavers every week for an eye test and either new lenses or compleat cheap glasses, I must have 5 paires of these cheep frames an £25 a time and i dont know how many old lenses from that time.
Mine lasted about 10 weeks in all then settled so i could go back to the frames i prefer.

I must say TOP MARKS to Specsavers they did not charge for the eye tests and rushed my new glasses so I could have them while i could still see with them, lol.

And NO i dont work for Specsavers.

I would hazard a guess that the reason for your blurred vision was high blood sugar levels not the Metformin. Once the Metformin dropped your levels then your eyes returned to normal.

Hello there
My first time blogging...
Sorry you have had problems with vision. I had such bad vision last September that I was below legal limit for driving. Optician confirmed my 'suspicion'! that I probably had diabetes. Blood test confirmed a level of 33. Doctors were very helpful, excellent support service here in Yeovil. I was given a blood testing kit and now have strips, lancets free from Docs. Would you qualify for a free one??? I am am happy with the 'Free style Freedom Lite'...especially as it's free!

Everyone gets a free annual eye check I have been told. I was also told not to try to organise new glasses until blood sugar levels are stabilised as the vision can change dramatically until this occurs. My long sight vision has returned but short sight vision is very poor. I had to but a series of cheap reading glasses to accommodate this variability.
I sincerely hope you manage to find the right support and advice relevant to your own circumstances.
All the best
Annie

Well Guessed Sugarless.
Oh yes totaly It was the change from high levles to what i should be that caused the change, the Metformin just helped bring me down to the right level thats why the vision probs started as soon as i started on Metformin.

Hi Again,

Got a test kit from my DN after my check-up yesterday so here are the first results...
27/01 - Before evening meal 7.2, 2hrs After evening meal 9.6
28/01 - Morning 8.6, before lunch 9.2, 2hrs after lunch 8.4

Feedback welcome

The 7.2 before evening meal isn't to far away, but how long after did you have the 9.6 reading as you don't say? Morning reading of 8.6 is still a little high, would be better below the 6.5 mark.

Some adjustment still needed, but not a million miles away!
