Hiya, just wanted to know if anyone else is suffering from depression while taking Sitagliptin (Januvia)? I really don't like how I'm feeling lately. It's just not me. I spoke to my GP about it and he just brushed it off. If anyone can share their side effects of this drug, I may feel a little better. Thanks

Thanks Bowell,

I hadn't realised that depression was linked to diabetes. Probably why my GP is so la-di-da about it! He just tells me that I'm a reluctant diabetic! :) I'm not, by the way, but it's amazing how you can go for a blood test to find out if your thyroid is iffy, and next, you are being told that you are a diabetic!! No glucose tollerance test, nothing! :)

Hi

I take Sitagliptin and have had no side effects other than initial headaches. Of course medication affects everyone in different ways so my experience is probably only relevant to me!

I love that expression "reluctant diabetic Joey.! IS there another kind?

Are there any voluntary diabetics or people who are thrilled and delighted with their diabetes.?

Maybe there is even a waiting list!

I know that many try to see positives in the situation and that is great but really.........

Don't you wish heat all the HCPs could experience it for a while?

Just off to see one now!

Sitaglyptin is the best thing that has happpened to me since diagnosis. Just let anyone try to take it away!

Thanks for all of your replies. Just out of curiosity, is anybody still drinking while taking Januvia? I feel like my life has gone into limbo. I miss sharing a bottle of wine with my hubby, occasionally, of course. When I tell my GP how miserable I am, he just tells me it will all be worth it in the end! I have no life!!!

Hi joeynomates,

You can have an occasional wine, just don't go over the top.

I personally think that you are finding it hard to accept your diagnosis and are seeing all the negatives. We all get down about it from time to time and that is a normal reaction.

I find this article helps me when I feel like screaming and wish that it would all go away. There are 4 parts, well worth a read.

Amazing how many people with diabetes don't have any obvious symptoms.
I was diagnosed when, whilst working in a stressy job and letting my weight get out of control, I had a sudden weight loss couple with massive thirst.
Classic symptoms, finger prick at Lloyds Pharmacy, straight round to GP.

However as soon as I cut out the sugar and sweets all my symptoms diappeared and I've had no obvious symptoms since.

I didn't have a glucose tollerance test - with my BG level there wasn't any need!

It is probably fortunate they picked up your condition when they did.
Presumably they tested for a reasonably broad range of things when trying to diagnose your problem.
What symptoms made them think it was your thyroid?

Oh, and mood changes are often part of diabetes; my wife says I was noticeably more grumpy and also more sleepy prior to my diagnosis.
[Notice the use of "more".]
It can take a while to adjut to the idea, as well.

Possibly your GP might have explained that it is normal and acceptable to be depressed after daignosis, and that it usually improves after a while.

Cheers

Hiya LGC
Well, a few years ago I quit smoking and converted ciggies to carbs! I shot up to 17 stone before I knew it. In fact, it was my daughter's health visitor that suggested I went for a thyroid check. I didn't have any symptoms of type 2 then and I still don't now, but since I've been on the Januvia, I have some really bad moments of depression and although my blood glucose is still hovering high in the mornings, it's not during the day. I also get 'hypo' symptoms because my body has been use to high blood glucose for such a long time.

My GP says that I should eat a low carb diet, but if I go low, I get the hypo symptoms. I read that if you do a low carb diet, you can produce keytones. If you produce keytons, you shouldn't take Januvia..AAARRRGGGHHHHH! :?

I take Januvia , metformin and Glicazide and a raft of other drugs
I do not have any keytones ?? Or suffer any mind bending Hypos

Low Carb does NOT = ZERO CARBS ??? Think lower carb NOT zero carb

Just cut a few out to start with ,things like spuds and bread would be a good start
just lower the amount of carbs on your plate

Replace 4 spuds with 1 spud

I eat most thing just a smaller amounts a few chips (5<>6) 1<>2 new potatoes Max
I/2 slice of bred butter and bowl of tom soup

Eat with the help of your Blood glucose meter

Take it slowly you will find what suits You

I guess I am finding it hard to deal with, but the biggest thing is that I am taking medication every day and it doesn't really seem to be working. I just don't want to be popping pills anymore. I can't take metformin - I tried again yesterday, but all I got was a bad stomach and that was from the slow release type. The Januvia did seem to be working, but now it's not working as good as it use to. I'm that fed up, I want to eat doughnuts!

Hi there, my name is Emma, im from new zealand. i have type 1 diabetes andn it is very out of control. I try hard to do everything right and i cant. Im very depressed about my diabetes and lack lots of motivation to do anything eg, doing my injections, regularly checking my sugar levels and eating the right things. I really need help because i get cramp alot and bad things happen to me like ending up in hospital for lancing boils and getting kidney infections due to cramps. I am only 17 years old and feeling like this is too much for me to go through. Im scared to live my life with this disease. Im the first inmy family for generations to ever have this and it really makes me feel down about myself. i feel restricted to everything i try to do.

Please help me,
Scared

hypocrisy, prejudice and the corrupt legal system (never got compensation I deserved from an accident)
I was diagnosed depression before I was diabetic, all to do with anger at how a compensation case for a serious accident I had was panning out (legal system has nothing to do with justice as far as I'm concerned). But I guess it's my nature I recovered from serious injury, now play league badminton again, coz I fight my injuries-still am-now I'm diabetic so I have that to fight too. But it's in my nature so fight it I will and have lost weight already. So whilst I understand you can get down I choose to look from different angles, having my body smashed up didn't beat me so there's no way diabetes will either. Taking tablets is like having breakfast, just something I have to do-so whilst I sympathise I'm hoping you can all look to the positive again soon as there's no need for this to hold you back.

Emma, firstly things will settle down and your life will be OK again. It can be a shock and the "Why me" sets in.That is negative you have to think positive, you have been diagnosed, think if you hadn't then what would have happened to you ?
Just be patient, and you will find a routine and foods and insulin levels to help you back to a relatively normal life, just being more careful, not sat on death row.
Hope you start to feel better very soon.
