Could people tell me what the use as a bread substitute? Or what they have for breakfast? I cannot tolerate porridge for some reason so have been having toast every morning because, annoyingly, you cannot find a breakfast cereal that's not packed with sugar.

Eggs bacon if you have to have something or coffee with cream (my own personal preference)
All the cr*p about the most important meal of the day is exactly that...extend your overnight fast a bit and give your insulin production a rest.

It's not the sugar but the total carbohydrate that is the one to look out for.
I would suggest that the difference between bread and breakfast cereal is touch and go, they are both based on a high proportion of carbohydrates, I can't / won't have either.. so for breakfast I have a variation on (i) yogurt and nuts, (ii) cheese olives, nuts or (iii) eggs and bacon, with mushrooms and can eat any of them all day long.

HI bulbiker, I assume coffee with cream stops BG from rising. Is that correct and can it be single cream. Sorry for all the questions but on waking I don't always want to eat something and if I don't my BS rises until I do.
Thanks

I use double cream in my coffee... creamier and marginally lower carb than single.
Whatever you do don't get that Elmlea fake stuff
I never really suffered from rising BG in the morning but it might be worth a try if you don't fancy eating.

Coffee and cream has little / no carbs in it so it should have little to no impact on your BG at all. But fat (from the cream, eg) will slow any BG spikes (which is why some people can go crazy nuts for ice cream in the summer) so if you're a Liver Dumper (like me) first thing in the morning, you can put something in your tummy without worrying about further messing up your BG.

There is a low carb loaf available from Waitrose, LivLife Seriously Seeded, 3.8g carbs per slice, I have tried it toasted with peanut butter, it’s not bad, nothing like fresh bread which is something that I do miss, but this seems ok for me, might be worth a try. Other people here mention the Lidl high protein rolls, I have tried these too but again prefer these toasted so will stick with the bread as it’s lower in both carbs and calories.

I no longer eat bread of any kind but looking back I think that the low carb breads such as Burgen and Lidl high protein rolls were a good stepping stone until I gave it up all together.

I treat breakfast as a proper meal, so I have things which used to be eaten for breakfast before processed grain became the newest fad diet.
Kippers with a Lidl protein roll, smoked fish with cauliflower and a few peas, meat from dinner the previous day with a stir fry of low carb veges or a salad, lots of omelettes too.

I often have an avocado with mayonnaise, or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Sometimes cheese and olives or a couple of boiled eggs with or without buttery soldiers made using the Lidl protein rolls. Or sometimes I’m just not hungry from the night before and don’t have anything until much later in the day.

Smoked salmon (room temp) over my electric egg cooker are a dream start to the day. Best powered appliance I have

Kippers with scrambled egg has become one of my favorite breakfasts of late even the wife and daughter like it, for me breakfast is important as some of my meds are best taken with or just after food and early in the day so I have my breakfast and then immediately take my meds .

I quite like the lidl protein rolls - half a slice is filling and you can put different toppings on. At the moment I prefer not to eat them for breakfast as my BG increases after waking up and the good folk on here have advised not eating carbs first thing in the morning. I'm gonna try the coffee and cream tomorrow and see if I can stop the BG from rising. How much cream do you put in the coffee. I normally have coffee with milk so not sure how much to put in to control BG levels.

Plain Cheerios with banana.

Bread.

Don't try this at home, it's not good.

I made a garlic, olive, and tomato wholemeal, serve with lashings of butter.

Probably iffy if you low carb though.

Beats the service station grub.

Cheerios. Corn Flakes. Organic cereals. Yogurt. Cottage cheese. Berries.
Every breakfast cereal I have looked at has loads of sugar. I thought Special K must surely be okay but it actually has more sugar than normal cornflakes.

The power of advertising is impressive.... you hear/see something often enough, the message will get through... very difficult to fight.
