Bygone days ....

Haha, we must be around the same age.

I was a bit old for it but rushed home from school to watch Wacky Races. I loved Muttley.
loved Tom and Jerry too.

:eek: How could I forget Wacky Races??? And Top Cat and Yogi Bear and Foghorn Leghorn

Ok think I need to back away slowly now, I'm having a nostalgia overload........

Aah, the Lamplighter, or the "Leerieligher" as we used to call him.

What memories of dusk on summer evenings you've inspired to come
floating back, JACKTHELAD
He would come by just before we were due to go inside for supper, then bed.
We waited in anticipation as he always tapped his pole with the wick into a
stank (drain) at our kerbside to empty the sulphur compound. (I think it was).
We were waiting to see if any of the compound missed the stank and land
on the road so we could spit on it and watch the bubbles rise up. (yuck. lol)

Here's a poem by that old favourite, Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 -1894) regarding
the days when the Leerieligher went on his rounds lighting the gas lamps in the
streets of Scotland's capitol, Edinburgh.

Rather sadly, Robert was a sickly child, hence the reference to "when I am stronger"
and looking out of the window.
Looking out for the lamplighter would be a regular occurrence for poor Robert.

.........................The Lamplighter
My tea is nearly ready and the sun has left the sky;
It's time to take the window to see Leerie going by;
For every night at teatime and before you take your seat,
With lantern and with ladder he comes posting up the street.
Now Tom would be a driver and Maria go to sea,
And my papa's a banker and as rich as he can be;
But I, when I am stronger and can choose what I'm to do,
O Leerie, I'll go round at night and light the lamps with you!
For we are very lucky, with a lamp before the door,
And Leerie stops to light it as he lights so many more;
And O', before you hurry by with ladder and with light,
O Leerie, see a little child and nod to him tonight!

He lived in more salubrious area than this, of course. :sour: :playful:

I don't remember ever seeing anyone light them other than my dad when one had blown out in severe weather.
He'd make us stand back then strike a match and throw it at the lamp and whoosh!
Big ball of flame and then splutter splutter it would settle down and light the street again.

What about "Buzby" the BT bird, "Tufty" the squirrel and the "Green Cross Code Man". I also remember building my smurf collection every time my dad filled up his car with fuel, I'm sure it was an Esso garage giving them

I have to mention Star Trek. The Original Series has been a big influence In my life and the message that we have to live together to go forward was insightful. A great deal of the science has come about. How many TV series especially Sci-Fi, have been repeated so many times on our sets?
Another big favourite of mine was 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.' A very young David McCallum played Illya Kuriyakin.
David has been a huge hit in the current series N.C.I.S.
Can anyone tell me what the acronym uncle stood for?

Juke box jury, dear me! How bad was that? David Jacobs and panel who wouldn't know music if it bit them!
What was that ITV similar prog when that there Cockney girl said - 'I'll give it foive!' Didn't you just want to strangle her?

Loved the original Prisoner spin off from Danger Man. Beautiful setting and you couldn't predict what we happening.
Patrick McGoohan. Great actor!

We stay in one of the cottages in Portmeirion for a week at least every other year. Not because of The Prisoner, it's just a great place to chill.

If you're ever in North Wales you can visit the beautiful village it was filmed in just a couple of miles down the road from Porthmadog.
Portmeirion ... some nice pics ... https://encrypted.google.com/search...vY0QWt8IHQBw&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAQ&biw=1280&bih=855
Been there...hated it.....the coast was nice...but the village was so boring......probably because we went on a coach trip and couldn't leave when we wanted to! Miserable coach driver too, told me off for making a mess with fish and chips.......It wasn't me, I didn't have anything to eat at all on his **** coach.:(
