Dear all,

Since a few weeks before my last blood tests I lowered my carbs and upped my fats. I enjoy this way of eating, pouring obscene amounts of olive oil on my salads at work. Now I wonder whether this is sustainable, as I am exercising a lot as well, and have problems with regular periods. So, in the internet-sphere I learned about upping one's carbs, say, every few days, just enough to fill up the stores and kick oneself out of ketosis (e.g. an extra 50 g carbs for dinner).

Does anyone have experiences with this, or know a bit more about this? Reading more scientific sources, I read that it is unnecessary, or a note on the side that some (quite some) female participants in ketogenic diet studies ended up getting irregular or absent periods.

You might want to take a look at the Leanne Vogel/Healthful Pursuit channel on Youtube. She does quite a bit on this subject especially in relation to women/women's issues.

I found the Healthful Pursuit channel food for though, thanks. (Pun intended)

Thank you. I actually got the idea from Leanne Vogel in the first place. I tried upping my carbs one night last week and felt quite good. I do feel more relaxed today and had a very good night's sleep. I will carefully monitor my blood sugars, weight and well-being and update you.

I think she uses sleep quality as one of the major factors in whether you should introduce some night time carbs. I've never had any issue sleeping on LCHF, so I haven't gone into it all in much detail. Very occasionally if I'm having trouble sleeping for some reason a hot cacao made with coconut milk seems to sort me out.

Hm... hot chocolate sounds good. I love hot turmeric milk, made with coconut milk as well, and the way my tummy feels after drinking it.

Eric Berg believes that sleeping well is very important in weight loss. I've been reading and listening to his various presentations a bit of late; not for weight loss, but for hormonal balancing.

Thanks, I will look him up!

In my own experience, I couldn't agree more!
I believe a decent restful sleep is better medicine than most drugs! And for your energy levels and what's more importantly, how you feel about yourself!

Can't comment re periods, but an intermittent increase in carbs helps with my weight loss. I am trying to be good, but about one evening in five on average, I can't resist a box of microchips, and end up having a 50-60 grams of carbs evening meal. I would expect this to increase my weight, as some glycogen will go into my muscles and take water with it, but often I am a pound or so lighter the following morning. So bad for blood glucose (sends me above 8 every time), but may be beneficial side effects.

I have a 'carb day' once a week. Not a huge number, but I generally add a portion of chips to my dinner or have rice with chilli, and it actually makes me feel better. My aches from LCHF are definitely relieved by a higher intake once a week.

I felt good after the first 'carb-up', but have had a headache each day after lunch since the second one. I wonder whether this is carb flu, or the diuretic effect of LCHF. Anyways, I wait a few more days before trying a third carb-up with less carbs, maybe 30g.
