Hello! I’m seeing a friend tonight and she wants Chinese. It’s her birthday so I don’t want to say no. What would be ok to order? Are there any noodles that are better to order? Thank you!

Not really noodles, no... But anything egg based, or meat/chicken/pork.... If you ask them to leave out any sweet & sour sauce, (most sauces have loads of sugar in, so avoiding those'd be a plan) that should help. Try to avoid stuff that's coated in batter.

And keep in mind, this is a one-off... You're not doing this once a week eh. You can relax a little every once and again, just don't do it often.

I find that egg foo yung don't rise my bg but unsurprisingly my favourite sweet and sour chicken with noodles sends then into obit :-(

I myself would cook it myself to be sure what was in it and how it would affect my blood sugars. (My poor friends.) Dishes such as:
1. Moo Shu (pork or chicken)
2. Chicken and Broccoli (garlic sauce)
3. Egg Foo Young
So these dishes would be a lower-carb options on the menu.

I go for crispy duck, I eat all the duck, all the veggies and just have two small pancakes with the merest smidge of sauce :hungry:

A group of my friends all wanted to go for a Chinese and I wasn’t keen as there is not a lot that I feel I can eat. A good friend said not to worry she knew the owner and would sort it. I did trust her as she had previously shown a lot of interest in what I can eat, but still not sure. Well, we had crispy duck or lamb with pancakes or lettuce then I had sliced steak on a bed of bean sprouts with a little not sweet sauce. I was so touched with the effort they had gone to that I was close to tears! It was very low carb and extremely tasty.

You'll have to be mindful of the sauces though, they use potato starch or corn flour to thicken it - for curries, stir fries etc. Of course the sugar content in them as well. You can order the veggies and meat of choice, char sui pork might be marinated in something before cooked. Duck, chicken, seafood if you like sea food is fine. If theres a traditional menu there, pork belly is a choice too. It might be better than char sui pork.

Just go and enjoy it it as part of a normal balanced diet, and don't feel you have to skimp on sauces etc. if you would rather have them. We all react differently, and yes it may push up your blood sugars to those beyond someone who does not suffer with Diabetes - but once in a while we all have to enjoy life! i say "go for it...."

A “normal balanced diet” as advised by the government is a very bad idea for most type 2. A personal take indeed on whether a spike such as you advocate is worth it or not, as is what once in a while means.

Thanks all for your helpful comments! We needed up having curry!! I had chicken tikka with no sauce, a small bit of rice and a little bit of sag aloo. Very nice. I hadn’t thought of having duck so next time I have Chinese I will go for that.

My Mr B LOVES chinese takeaways. They were his weekly treat before I moved in and threw a spanner in the works. ;)

But in order to feed his habit, I have done some trial and error and found out what works for me. Of course, each chinese restaurant is going to vary a bit.

Our local one does fabulous omelettes. I often have the roast pork one. And the various duck options are basically duck, plus skin in a sauce. Depending on my mood, I either get the crispy duck and discard the carby side bits, or have the duck in sauce but lift it out of the sauce to drain before eating. There is still plenty of flavour, and it still tastes very sweet to me, but my blood gluocse tests ok afterwards.

Another option is the ribs. They do a fabulous dry rib with lime and chilli. Blows my head off, but sometimes that is just what I need. :D

I avoid all the noodles and rice, and gloopy sauces though, and make sure I drink enough throughout the evening. I know when I have misjudged things when my sleep is affected.

Hope that helps for next time. :)
