Christmas Treats?

Hi,
Does anyone allow themselves treats? Are you planning any treats at Christmas?
Is it ok to have a treat?
I was diagnosed as T2D in October 2021. Since then I have had virtually none of the things that with hindsight, I realise we’re my undoing!
I was especially strict last Christmas, but this Christmas, with by A1C at 43, I’m planning on having a few small treats.
My weaknesses were, Cadbury’s Dairy Milk. Chunky Kit Kats. Custard Tarts (usuall from Aldi, but in an emergency any would suffice).
Custard creams and Pringles.
Over the Christmas period I’m planning on having one Chunky Kit Kat, one custard tart and a few squares of Dairy milk!
What are your treats?
Also has anyone discovered or made any good snacks?
A very ( early) Merry Christmas.
Cheers Nick.

I am planning on having quite a few treats, but in moderation... After all it is just a couple days!
My guilty pleasure will be Twiglets, Trifle, swede, mash potatoes, parsnip, Mon Cherie chocolates, egg nog, liquor chocolates, After Eights, a few cognacs, Irish coffee with Kahlua, and a few glasses of white wine.. Oooh and a decent shortcake biscuit! All my other Christmas favourites are within my no sugar, low carb diet.... Oh! I forgot about the Port.

My first Christmas I searched for low carb subs for my favourite treats. I made low carb mince pies (ground almonds with a little butter for the crust and a mix of cooking apples, dried unsweetened cranberries and loads of spices), I made sage and onion stuffing with ground almonds instead of breadcrumbs, and I melted some 90% chocolate, add some warmed cream and sweetener and flavouring (orange) to half of it and made almond paste with sweetener and rolled it in the rest of the chocolate.
Now I usually make a low carb fruit cake, again with extra spices and dried cranberries along with a little cooking apple.

And kohlrabi makes a roasted potato sub if you boil if first then put in the oven with oil.

What delicious ideas! I had completely forgotten about mince pies.. I used to eat loads of them.. will have to limit it to one proper one and a few based on your ideas.
Kohlrabi puree... what a great idea! I am loving pureed cauliflower which I had never tried before. I am going to try and make some stick shapes out of a stiff version of the mash, then coat them in parmesan and deep fry instead of the parsnips. It works with stiff polenta, so why not.

Every year we see the results of going too far with the choices. The traditional dinner should be easy, replacing potatoes with butternut squash.

Something in the region of what @Triciaw does can work. I have had home made keto cheese cakes, brownies, lemon drizzle made with almond flour.

I don’t stray much at Christmas, I find that ‘just one’ leads to ’just one more’. I have found low carb treats from a company called Deliciously Guilt Free, they already have their mince pies for sale and I’m hoping they have Xmas puds like last year too. They have cakes, biscuits and chocolate, all low carb. The baked goods freeze well. There’s also the Low Carb Food Company for bread and snacks amongst other things.

Luckily for me I am alone. Pretty good at Christmas but can go astray between Christmas and New Year!
I am having fillet steak for Christmas.
I miss fresh figs so might try some if they turn up in the shopping!
Used to make more but still trying to get those numbers down....

Whilst I’m thinking about food. ( I seem to spend quite a lot of time doing that), Has anyone found either a decent low carb wrap, or a good recipe for one?

I find that the so called treats are really not all that amazing, and that by continuing to eat low carb I feel so much better than many others look, and with no need to start a fitness regime at new year.
Yes I do have salmon rather than white fish, a full on trifle rather than jelly and berries, and a couple of chocolate mousses plus a few Yorkshire puddings high in eggs and cream when we go for meals with family and that seems to be enough.

The only thing we are thinking of doing this xmas meal is gettting a King Island Crayfish instead of our usual whole reef fish. The rest of the seafood and salads stay as usual.

We do not eat mince pies or pudding, but I will be having a slice or two of Lions Traditional xmas cake.

I guess it is time to guide folks to this thread…

I love all your ideas and I was literally thinking this morning about how to make my stuffing lower carb. Thanks for the ground almonds suggestion.

It depends on how ow carb you choose to go, but I've found that a single small fresh fig is within my acceptable carby limits. Mine usually go into a salad rather than as a sweet.

Sesame flour might be another possible option.

I've made stuffing with coconut flour - my first attempt (years ago now) came out perfect, but I've never been able to successfully repeat that result.... Coconut flour is wilfully obtuse when it comes to me and baking.

That's the thing. They come in packs of 4 or 6. Just 1..... Mmmmm shall see where my BS are by then. When you live alone there is no one to share with. Then they have to actually like fresh figs lol

Been selling them singly for the last few weeks in Lidls. About 29p each.

I'm staying keto and enjoying the planned roast rib of beef with lots of green veg. It's served me so well sticking to T2-friendly food, I haven't the slightest desire to eat anything that would wreck it. I'm neither a prig nor a saint, but I am sensible - it's an underrated attribute.

All the best for all of you who intend to eat other things - I hope you have lots to enjoy, and a really happy time.
