Coffee with Milk

i used to really love a cup of tea and when i worked 12.5 hour nights (4 on / 4 off) i think it was the hourly pint size mugs (with semi skimmed milk) that kept me sane. Then, feeling rubbish with a BG test of 28.9, I got put on to insulin and started regular testing with my meter. I couldn't understand why my BG was going up and down all night (but in an generally upwards direction) despite me eating what i thought was a suitable diet for a diabetic. Turned out the night time high readings while I was at work was due to the milk in the tea. I haven't had a cup of tea since because (to me) it tastes all wrong without skimmed or semi skimmed. :(Nothing

The thing is we are all different, some of us can tolerate milk carbs and some can't. I wish I could. :(

Have you tried lactofree milk? They do a semi skimmed which has about half the carbs of regular milk. I have the full fat in my many mugs of tea every day.

You have been very successful with what your doing. No need to change.
The reason I use cream in my coffee in the morning is it stops my liver from dumping glucose and it keeps my BG from rising in the morning. I am most insulin resistant in the morning and milk has more carbs the cream so I avoid it.
Hi, not come across the idea of cream stopping the liver from glucose dumping despite using cream in coffee myself. Any idea what the mechanism is roughly please?

Always beware of vending machines at work places or tassimo machines etc..

All these machines have a "preserved variation of milk"....

I used to work for a company that did free cholesterol checks.
Then they introduced free vending machines for the tea and coffee.

Many of us had marked increases in cholesterol.
We realised it was down to the coffee mate in the machines, drinking free coffee continuously all day.
It used to be full of saturated coconut fat, which they've dropped now.
Black coffee and powdered skimmed milk after that.
(Not ideal, as I still took sugar in those days. :( )

Oh no, nothing that modern - it was good old' Yorkshire Tea made with loose leaves in a HUGE teapot that was just rinsed, never washed in case it tainted the tea. :)

Absolutely - I make tea in a glass coffee pot and just wipe it after use, otherwise it tastes of washing up water. I did at one time work for Allied Lyons doing storage testing, so I know my sense of taste is rather good.

The way I understand it is, when you haven't eaten in a while the liver releases glucose for your body to use as energy.
For most healthy people the response would be to release insulin to control it. But as most Typ 2 are insulin resistant it pushes our BG up.
So when I take 36% cream (or any fat) first thing in the morning it prevents my liver from releasing glucose.
I know there are some on this forum who can explain it in a more detailed scientific way.

We use evaporated milk (tinned milk) in coffee and all our visitors always say my coffee tastes great, I put a dash in tea as I like my tea strong. also a good alternative for cream on desserts or berries.
we use Lidl own brand as cheap values are
410g tins
Per 100g 12.7g carbs 10g 1.3g carb.
162 calories in 100g.
9% milk fat + it has added vitamin D
