Hi all
I was originally diagnosed in 2010 with type 2 diabetes I didn't really do a lot of research about it just thought I needed to lose weight so I went on the lite n easy diet where your weeks meals are delivered each week and lost 15 kilos in weight the next time I went to the doctors they did a blood test and the doctor said my bloods were fine and that I wasn't diabetic which was great I was confused at the time and asked the doctor do I say I am or im not a diabetic he said id say your not any way 2 years later and 2 ops down the line my doctor did blood tests and said the diabetes is back I have put the weight back on :( im unable to go back onto the lite n easy meals because I can no longer afford them so have been trying to do it myself
I love bread id usually just make a sandwich when I was hungry But think that's just made me put weight on
so I thought id cut out all bread potatoes rice I don't eat pasta so really I was having very few carbs
I have a monitor and im finding that its not making a big difference
I have my last meal at 7 then do a test at 9pm the blood test is usually between 7.5 and 8.1 I only drink water after nine yet when I wake and do the early morning blood test its spiked to 9.1 and 9.4 I just don't understand how it can do that I had maybe 5 % carbs those two days
also if I take out carbs from my diet and have more protein it says that's bad for you to
on all the phone apps its saying its ideal to have 50% carbs 30%fat n 20%protein does any one know what the ideal amounts are for a diabetic
what do people substitute bread with sorry if this is big long its my first time here and im searching for some answers

HI. 50% carbs is far too high and I would scrap that phone app as it appears to be based on the notorious eat-well (=eat-unwell) plate! Set a daily carb target that helps you lose weight. Many of us stay below 200gm/day and many much less. I love bread but it is bad for blood sugar. Protein is fine and so is a sensible level of fat. Veg is great of course and so are some fruits. I try to slice my bread in thin slices and I have a low-GI flour loaf.

My fitness pal used to recommend 50% carbs.... Now thanks to robert72 telling me, you can now adjust your nutition goals to what you want. Robert72 only mentioned it in a posting last night.. I've done it and its great now to type in the percentage of carbs that you want to have...

Hi Michelle
If you go to goals and touch on one of Carbohydrates, Protein or Fat you should get a Macronutrients menu
I have set mine to Carbs 5%, Protein 20%, Fat 75% but you might not want to go so low on the carbs to start with - you could balance that against fats leaving protein at 20%. We are all different.

Seems to only be in the latest update for the app, for the iPhone but not the iPad

You can change it on the web and it should sync across all your devices (assuming you log in with the same account)

Go to: My Home > Goals > Change Goals. Click on Custom and then click Continue

Bread is one of the more difficult carbs to deal with. I can eat 100% rye bread without problems, but what is often sold as rye may only have 25% rye in it. Same with wholemeal bread, it's mixed with other things.

Any bread which is very light and springy has a lot of white flour in it. Wholemeal bread does rise, but nothing like as much as refined white flour. Rye flour is quite solid and takes ages to rise, which is why production concious bakers add white flour or worse still, sugar, to speed the process up.

Both rye and wholemeal flours are lower GI than white loaves but you still have to be careful about the amount you eat. Try some very solid pumpernickel and see how you get on with that. If pumpernickel spikes you, any bread wheat or rye will spike you and it is not worth bothering to try them. If however you get on OK with pumpernickel, you can start to experiment with other loaves, those with mostly rye and then a little bit of wholemeal flour and then a better mix and so on. I get on with a 50:50 wholemeal/rye mix if I can be sure it is genuinely wholegrain wheat and wholegrain rye.

I recently got a loaf which was sold as rye with carraway but on questioning turned out to be 25% rye, 25% wholegrain wheat and 50% refined white flour. It was OK for a slice with a soup or similar but I wouldn't fill a sandwich box with it for lunch.

Hi yorksman
Thanks for the information ive never heard of pumpernickel but ill google it and see if they sell it over here Ive managed to stay off all bread and potatoes n rice for the last two weeks but don't think that's going to be sustainable long time ill also try and get the rye bread too I don't want to be eating it every day but maybe as a treat once a week How long have you been diagnosed with diabetes do you monitor your blood daily and if so how long would it normally take to show a reduction in your blood sugar levels if you really reduced carbs
have you managed to drop your blood levels
I really appreciate your feed back as im really new to all this and have my first meeting with dietician on thursday
thanks again
michelle

Are you in Australia, mysterylady? I also used to get lite n easy and it was so convenient - I also lost a lot of weight using it, but ended up stopping my deliveries when I realised what the food was doing to my postprandial blood glucose. It's carbs, carbs and more carbs with every meal.

I've been thinking of emailing them to ask if they'd consider doing an LCHF version of their diet - life would be so much simpler again if I didn't have to cook for myself ;)

I've been on LCHF now for almost 2 years - I also went grain/gluten free at the same time and can honestly say I don't miss bread in the least.

Hi Indy
Yes I'm in Australia in perth I know with the lite and easy that it doesn't seem like a diet at all the food was so delicious and filling all I know is that when I had it all my symptoms that I was having went away and all my blood results came back good I'm not sure how that could have happened with an all carb diet I must admit that I didn't test my blood after meals when I was in lite and easy I had lost a lot of weight and was feeling very fit exercising more and wasn't even thinking about food or shopping for food
I too wish they would cater for people with diabetes if I'm unable to lose weight on a LCHF diet I might consider going back on lite and easy and test my blood sugars When you lost the weight on lite and easy were your blood tests. Better

So, Is My fitness Pal something that you would recommend for keeping an eye on how much of each nutrient you are eating? What do others think>

Hi Pam
I'd say the app was very good because not only does it keep track of carbs but of other things that your eating and how many calories your having it allows u to adjust the meals your having. It's a free app so nothing to lose really
