Covid and Work, Covid Advice and General Chat

Yup, that’s the trust for the area I live in. Grrrrrrr. Luckily a new Diabetes Consultant was asked to come out of retirement to take up a vacant post and he’s a breath of fresh air. We need more like him to shake it all up. I was shocked when I moved to the area 46 years ago, and very very lucky to have had my first baby with a superb team in the West Country. I called the diabetes shots, but my second baby’s birth was horrendous. A Caesar. Luckily our younger daughter’s a toughie and she pulled through, and went on to flourish.

Fascinating day back today after my test on Thursday. Not one person within the leadership team asked how I was or expressed any relief that my result was negative,. Absolutely nothing. After my resignation last week my Line Manager was meant to be in contact to see if there was anything they could do to support me in these last two weeks. Not a titter from them at all, and in fact she has pretty much ignored me since I sent my resignation letter. Almost as if I am not their problem now, so fine I will just protect myself as much as I can until I leave and not go above and beyond like I usually do work wise. Must say I am very disappointed in them, and have been since the email from the Head last week said I needed to get a test asap because,,,,,,,they were short of staff!!! Maybe I expect too much from people but if I was the Head I would have at least spoken to a staff member who is apparently vulnerable after they have had to get a test. Even if it's just a "you ok?, glad all is well." Doesn't cost much does it?! Pleased I am leaving now to be honest and counting down the days.

Sadly I fear a long winter is ahead and once cases star appearing in places they haven't been reality will hit home. I really feel a lot of people just don't think it's going to affect them and whilst the government start blaming pubs and restaurants for the rise in cases no-one seems brave enough to say, er what about schools and universities?! It's baffling how youngsters who go to pubs are being told by Matt Hancock "don't hug granny, just in case" but no mention of students in schools and educational settings not hugging granny just in case!! There seems to be a totally blinkered attitude to the risk in schools or a don't give a monkeys attitude and I just cannot fathom why. I know that kids need an education but at what cost? If it weren't for teachers wearing masks, some with a real "do I have to wear it" attitude and hand washing at sanitizer posts you really wouldn't even think that there is a virus about. Like anything until it happens to you it just is someone else's problem!

Sorry that nobody asked how you were Max. As you said it doesn't take much to check somebody's ok.
I too am frustrated and find it incredulous that nobody has mentioned schools and just a passing comment re universities affecting rates in Liverpool I think it was.
Take care and keep yourself protected as much as you can till you finish work.

Thank you. I'm probably making too big a deal of it, but it's courtesy for me and not just in a middle of a pandemic!! If a colleague of mine is off ill, when they return I will ask how they are, as you say it doesn't take much!

There is a regime change going on with the very top man leaving for a new challenge and there is a lot of frustrating under current at the moment with new rules, guidelines and the new regime looking over peoples shoulders so I guess the new man is struggling pressure wise taking over in such a time.

Never quite sure why schools do this. Happened at my old school where it was a well oiled machine, a happy place to work and never any problems. Suddenly revamps start taking place, workloads increase, boxes need to be ticked and they seem to forget what makes it such a good school in the first place preferring to concentrate on expansion with more students which in turn means more money. Typical example of quantity over quality!!

Anyway I digress..............

I dont think you are making a big deal of things. It is indeed common courtesy. You have always spoken very highly of your school and your job,and being there has caused you considerable stress. A simple how are you or acknowledgement of the implications of a positive test would have taken only a few minutes.
Strange times we are living in,to say the least.! Goodness knows how this will end. No one seems to be in control outwardly just a fight between economy, science and politics. Who ever wins it will be those who can least afford it that lose.
I saw the first two episodes of Spitting Image last night. Some helpful person had uploaded it to Facebook. I used to love the original series, very witty and anyone of that era may remember how biting it seemed.
I'm glad I didn't pay for it. Very clever but barely raised a smile. Reality was too close, maybe even worse than the satire and that doesn't feel much fun.

One set of Sage documents reveals how much individual policies may cut the R number by:

  • Close all bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants could reduce R by 0.1-0.2
  • Close all indoor gyms and leisure centres could reduce R by up to 0.1
  • Closing non-essential retail would have "minimal impact" on transmission
  • Stopping people mixing in homes could reduce R by 0.1-0.2
  • Working from home reduce R by 0.2-0.4
  • Closing all schools could reduce R by 0.2-0.5

Do you have any idea how Sage or anyone can possibly know this given all the other variable? When the lockdown began the R rate had just peaked. When society was opened up almost fully it was then Summer with less transmission.
Does the R rate really matter to somebody deciding on whether to participate in society based on their individual risk in a scenario where this corona virus is now endemic?

It certainly does to me. That and other indicators of the current spread like the cases per 100,000 figures. These are also what govts across the world use to decide on the locations and extents of lockdowns they impose. I had already decided, based on the R rate in my area, not to have a supermarket delivery this month.

I am concerned that on this basis you are unlikely to leave the house until April 2021 particularly now that the flu is out and about and being counted within the same stats as Covid.

got a link to proof that covid is being counted in the same stats as flu please?

Myth.
The report that was been done weekly by PHE regarding covid stats in now also including flu stats as well but still reported separately. So one report but two sets of figures. This begins in October as flu figures are reported annually then anyway. Not at all what is being spread amongst certain sections of society/social media.

“This will be the last COVID-19 surveillance report, as of 8 October 2020, the information in this report will be published in a combined Weekly flu and COVID-19 Surveillance Report on GOV.UK.”

Quite. Junk in junk out. Classic Ferguson. Minus everything by a factor of 12 to get the correct real world answer.
Epidemiologists are professionals, like engineers, mathematicians etc, who have methodologies for calculating these results based on reliable but complex principles.
