diabetes and the DVLA - what can I expect ?

Hi I have to bring my details regarding my diabetes up to date with the DVLA , my control is good 6.9 last hba1c - and my eyesight is fine , I dont wear glasses .
However I do feel like I,M under scrutiny , and just wondered what they,ll actually do ? will they revoke my licence - just for having type 1 ???
What do they do ??
Why do they require this info ??
 
They don't do anything if you've got good control - hardly seemed bothered about my diabetes when I was diagnosed. Same with the insurance companies... hardly affected my insurance premiums, if at all.
 
They will cancel your driving licence and issue you with a new one that will probably be for 3 years, then every 3 years providing you have not had any serious hypos and your eyesight is OK they will reissue another 3 year licence.

Should you suffer any hypo while driving that is reported to the DVLA they will revoke your licence immediately.

If you have good control and test regularly there is no reason why you shouldnt be driving for a very long time to come, dont worry :)


The only good thing about all this is you dont have to pay for your driving licence any more :D
 
The DVLA should write to your GP/Consultant but as a norm you can carry on driving whilst waiting. Normally they will just renew it, for what seems to be the norm of 3 years.

Prior to recently, I have held my licence with no problems for 25 years. I have had horrible dealings with DVLA and the possibility of losing my licence recently which has had a huge response from members here. Currently I am still allowed to drive by the DVLA, but I have had an awful experience that I hope nobody else ever goes through.

Please make sure that you 'stay above 5 before and when you drive'.

The Disabilty Act stopped the Insurance Companies from 'loading' premiums for type 1 diabetics, and generally nowadays thee are loads of companies that deal with us, but there are some that just simply decline type 1 diabetics. Make sure your Insurance Company is aware of your diabetes.
 
When you say you have your licence for 25 years without any problems, am I misunderstanding this as my licence has been restricted to 3 years ever since I was diagnosed nearly 25 years ago?

The stay above 5 info is not currently on the DVLA website my DAFNE specialist nurse is going to copy it for me.

Just for info I recently rang the DVLA to upgrade my licence to C1 as I want to drive a horsebox and they were really helpful.

No, I have renewed my licence every 3 years for the past 25 years, no problems.

I can only point you towards my posting with dvla and hypo, and there are lots of helpful advice on there too from other members. I won't list details again, but I am sure it is above 5 to drive......
