I have felt so much better since giving up the grains. ;) .I don't know if it was the undiagnosed high BG or IBS or my gut flora type thing, but I had loose stools for several years.

Jack412, I gave up wheat, rye, and barley three to four years ago, and now all the other grains since starting the LCHF diet. I think it's been a good thing as I was able to reverse my iron and B-12 deficiencies, (which, interestingly, I learned last night, can also be caused by SIBO). The naturopath who diagnosed me with gluten sensitivity, based on my health profile, then confirmed with testing through enterolab.com , said she believes that 1 out of 8 people are sensitive to gluten.

I was wondering how long all of you had to wait to get a proper diagnosis for ulcerative colitis or Crohn's? I'm apologising for my next bit in advance if it's too much for some people ....but at the moment things are chronic for me, I've been going to the toilet between 8-30 times daily with mucus and sometimes blood, at times I can be stuck there for more than half an hour. This has been everyday for 5 weeks now.

I'm tired, have terrible cramping and joint pain, headaches, mouth ulcers.

I cannot get an appointment with the gastro clinic for another 2 months!! Is it realistic for me to go on like this for another 8 weeks?

You could ask your Dr. to fax/email the Consultant for an earlier appointment.
If you would be happy to take them then your Dr. can give you a course of steroids. They will raise your blood sugars but will give you relief from the Crohns.

Hi Catherine, would the doctor prescribe them without me seeing the gastro clinic first?

Diabetes and ulcerative colitis.... :) Rude people... Violence.... and the amount of time I spend away from my beautiful family in the UK...
Susikav, tell me more about what itchy ears means. :)
Hiya.. I stumbled across a site about over-colonisation of Candida in your bowel... It said that it could cause serious disruption in the digestive system, among other things, and also, one of the things it gives you is itchy ears! My doc told me many years ago it was because I insisted on holidaying in the Carribean.. :) it said that not eating carbs was the quickest way to bring levels back to what is normal for your body... My ears no longer itch... :) candida feeds on carbs... Another good reason not to eat them... So many.., :) Susi...

Yes he should do if you explain to him how bad it is. From previous experience, the Gastro Consultant only like steroids used twice a year as there are other meds available once your diagnosis has been made.

Really? I found lots of other old ladies on there - having said that, I haven't logged in for 6 months... maybe they decided to restrict it? They never minded that I was old.. :) Or mentioned it really, except to offer me advice... :)

The only forum that comes up when I search their website says this:
"Welcome

I've emailed the admin to ask about other ages.

I feel so bad for you my dear... I have been there and done that... All I can tell you is to stop eating carbohydrates, drink plenty of water and see how you feel after a week... I know bowel disease is exhausting, debilitating, embarrassing and painful... Monstrous disease... It can take a couple of years to diagnose, even these days .., I was told I had Crohn's after years of believing I had IBS... After around 50 years of struggling I started to low-carb for diabetes, having found this wonderful forum, and from day one my UC cleared up... I have had I minor flare in 5.5 months now, that was down to too much flax I believe... I have a flat tummy almost every day and am no longer mildly depressed permanently... I hated steroids and would fast rather than take them, to lift myself up a bit.. I have not the responsibilities now so it was easier as I got older to be sick... I feel so bad for you and wish you would get better quickly... Lots of luck honey... Susi...

Thank you Susi

It is exhausting, it's become a bit normal now after 5 weeks and I can cope but because we are trying to get pregnant I don't want this to effect things.

I'm also reluctant to take steroids for that reason as well as others. I've stopped carbs, fat, dairy etc and I'm sticking to really plain foods but still struggling. I guess that's because my system isn't getting any time to heal at the moment.

I'm going to just keep ringing the hospital once a week to check for cancellations. Obviously I'm hoping it isn't Crohn's or UC but it all seems to point that way.

I already have diabetes, lupus, a tumour in my liver, neuropathy and arthritis so I'd rather not add another to my list :)

You poor wee soul... The big guns are turned on you it seems... If you low-carb you need fat... Avocados, coconut oil, butter, cream, bacon, sausages etc... I was so scared at first... Years without fat or sugar.. :) check out the low-carb sites and find some lovely gentle recipes... There's a low-carb recipe thread on here which has lovely tried and tested recipes... Your poor tummy can't get worse really, can it? :) don't eat porridge, pasta, rice or wheat, etc, and see how you go..

Thanks Susikav. It never occurred to me that itchy ears might be a symptom. There actually were a few weeks that my ears were itchy, but it's subsided, perhaps due to the LCHF diet!

I believe you asked if I planned to try another fiber, perhaps acacia. I think for now, I'm going to stick with the Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and the LCHF diet, and get my colitis back under control. Might try adding L-glutamine, but a bit hesitant about any additional changes for now. The SCD has worked for me in the past, so I think it will this time too.

I watched a few older videos of Elaine Gottschall yesterday on YouTube - (promoter of the SCD; author of Breaking the Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet). I think she's an amazing woman for what she did for those of us who have Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

She saved her 4 year old daughter from surgery in the 60's. She kept seeing specialists, more than a dozen, until she found the one who provided the diet that completely restored her daughter's health. Then she hit the medical library to learn how food could have made her daughter so ill, then restore her health with only a few changes to her diet.

What she found made her mad. She said milk was identified as making what we now refer to as IBS worse in the 1940's medical literature. Yet few doctors, specialists even, knew this in the 1960's. Her husband wisely encouraged her to go to college and get the education she missed out on when the depression of the 1930's hit.

At age 47, she did just that and spent 13 years there. She learned not just about nutrition but about immuniology and other subjects related to our health. At age 60, left school and began teaching, I believe at a local college. During that time, students approached her for help with their IBS and she helped more than 400 students with the diet. She said 75% were helped.

She could have continued, but at her husband's urging, she wrote a book to reach as many IBS sufferers as she could. She said publishers were hesitant to publish her book because they felt not enough people had the problem. She went on to share that after one appearance alone on an American television show, she sold 23,000 books in one week.

I was saddened to learn that she passed away in 2005, but pleased to see that her work continues through continued printings of her book, her website, and a newer website, SCDLifestyle.com , which I'm just beginning to explore. I listened to one of their podcasts last night. It was excellent!

I'm so glad my gastroenterologist recommended her book to me in 2000.

I have wonderful news. I saw the ophthalmologist today, my eyes are normal. No damage due to the diabetes. Vision's gotten worse, but nothing concerning. Liver okay. Check. Kidney's okay. Check. Eyes okay. Check. Now all I have to worry about is getting my diabetes under control and improving my cardiovascular health. I'm so relieved...happy too!

All your news is good... that's fantastic Winnie... it must have been such a relief for you... :) Lovely... I am going to research the SCD.. I have never heard of it, it sounds really interesting... What an amazing woman she was.... Maybe @gemma6549 might be interested in it... she seems to have everything that the good lord could throw at her... :( It's not fair, is it?

I wonder if I have the right forum name? I will check it out... or maybe they changed the rules because of the type of traffic they were getting? Thanks for that...

Susikav, I think you'll find that the Specific Carbohydrate Diet is very similar to the LCHF diet. There are two websites now. Both have something to offer.

gemma6549, sometimes life can be very unfair. It's hard. Will post here for you as I come across things I think will be helpful or encouraging for you. Not knowing what's causing the symptoms or what to do is part of what makes these circumstances so difficult. For now sampling different sites for IBS, crohn's and colitis might be helpful. Who knows, you might come across something that's helpful.

Thanks both of you. Yes it's all just trial and error for now.

I'm still in good spirits :) I might have a few things going on but I'm still very lucky, all things that I can still live with so it's not so bad.

The 3 days of just chicken and vegetables seemed to help a little. And yes plenty of water.

I'm just going to keep researching and keep a diary of what I eat and the symptoms to try and make some connections.

Thank you all for all your kind words and advice.
