Hi and welcome.

The thing I wish someone had told me right at the beginning is to forget everything you think you know about healthy eating. A lot of us on here have had huge success with low carb ways of eating. In my case I got my diabetic blood glucose back to low-normal in four months, and in the four and a half years since I've lost around 35-40kg or 90-100lbs. Not sure exactly because I don't know how heavy I was when I started. No meds ever.

My diet is pretty much all meat and dairy plus some above ground vegetables. That's because I'm aiming for a total daily carb intake around 20g. Meat includes beef, pork, lamb, chicken, fish etc, dairy is cream, butter, that sort of thing, and the veg are cauliflower, green beans, spinach, broccoli, onions, tomatoes etc. As a rule I don't eat carb-heavy foods like bread, cereals, rice, pasta, pastry, anything sweet, beer or potatoes. All of those are high in carb and we tend to eat a fair bit of them when they're part of a meal. There are some low-carb substitutes around, and you will probably have to change your shopping habits.

Thing is, you need to find what works for you. You might not need to be as extreme as I am.

This forum is a really good resource and I'd advise you to read a round a bit and have a look at the "success stories" section in particular - you'll see how various folks have tackled it.

Best of luck, and ask as many questions as you want.
