I haven't posted on this forum for about 2 years. Back then my hba1c was 44 and then went down to 37.
I was caring for my elderly brother for over 12 months as his wife had passed away, so my low carb diet was pushed to one side.
What a shock I got when i went for my hba1c 18th May and the results came back as 69. I then saw the DN on 6th July and had another hba1c test and kidney function test. The DN wanted to put me unto one tablet a day, also statins as my cholesterol is out of normal range. She didn't say what it was.

Do you think that 7 weeks is long enough to lower my BG to below 60?

I tested it on my glucose monitor yesterday getting a result of 6.5 mmol. That was 3 hours after food.

Hi @LynDoo .. and welcome back
There should be no reason why you can't bring your levels down in your timescale ..

The key point to take on board is that managing and controlling your diabetes through exercise, diet and testing your Blood Glucose seems to be the best way forward for many people. For me, committing to an LCHF (Low Carb High Fat) lifestyle and testing 3-5 times a day seems to be working and you'll find that there is a wealth of info, relevant advice and positive support about LCHF on the forum ..

I suggest that you read the discussion on the Low Carb Diet forum .. together with the following Diet Doctor websites ...

Hope this helps

Hi Lyndoo. You're more experienced with your diabetes than me as I was only diagnosed 9 weeks ago and I've managed to get my HbA1c down from 70 to 45. I'm on Metformin 500mg three times a day. I started by restricting my carbs to < 100g/day, then the last couple of weeks I've reduced them a bit further. I'm sure you can get yours down below 60 in seven weeks. Best of luck x

Hi AM1874,

I had my second HbA1c test last week, so just waiting to hear the results. If I don't hear from DN tomorrow with the results, then i have to make an appointment to see her first week in August as she will be on holiday until then.
At the minute i'm trying to stick to a low carb diet, hoping it will work again.

Thanks for the websites. I will go to them tomorrow.

Hi Rachox,

Problem is that i didn't know my BG was so high when i was on holiday at start of June. I was eating all the wrong things....white bread, jam, apple tart, chocolate biscuits and fish and chips. I hadn't been to my doctors to get the results or i would have stayed away from all these. So it's not a full 7 weeks on LC's, more like 5 1/2 weeks.

I know all the stress of looking after my brother didn't help, as i wasn't getting meals at the proper times and was buying coffee and a donut on way home.

Hi @LynDoo I remember that when I was first diagnosed (with a jaw dropping 122 HB1ac) I had a second HB1ac test after a few weeks just to see how things were going, that is probably what they are doing with you, my HB1ac had gone down into the 80s, so it was clear that the medication was starting to work. I have found that routine is really important to me. Up in the morning, test bloods, note, take pills, eat. Sometimes it's quite hard to stay on the straight and narrow, but I try. Must have been very difficult for you looking after your brother, I am not surprised that you were eating on the run. I hope that you are able to look after yourself now. You have had lovely blood sugars before, I am certain you can do it again.

Hello Providence 62
Yes, it was hard looking after my brother as he suffers from Agarophobia and can't go out. At the present time his neighbours are shopping and keeping an eye out for him. It's a lot less stress for me as i suffer with ME/CFS and need plenty of rest.

I'm trying to stick to a routine of having my meals at the same time every day. I hope to be doing a lot more testing myself. The DN said that i don't need a monitor or to test. But she doesn't know that i already have one.Lol.

If the question is "Has it been done before?" then the answer is yes. But the fact is
1) all of us respond differently, so it will be ok so long as we are moving in the right direction
2) we should focus on the sustainability of our choices so that we can maintain the gains.

All the best to your journey.

Hi Kokhongw,

This was a bit of a wake up call. So it's a journey that i intend to stick with this time.

That's why I need to test my BG a few times a weak for the rest of my life however well I think I have it under control.

Try adding one or two days of fasting to low carb if you want to get a result quicker, but get low carb you can live with for the rest of your life in place first.

Hi ringi,

Most days i just have a cup of tea at lunchtime.
I do find breakfast is the hardest as i need to get my cholesterol down as well.
I was told just one slice of brown bread a day and plenty of vegetables and fruit, but no fats.
Now, i do know that some fruit and veg have too many carbs.
I was also told to have 1-2 potatoes a day.

Bread and potatoes will elevate your glucose levels a lot if you are a typical type two, and you need to watch the amount of starch and sugars - I tend to stay with foods which have 10 percent carbs or less.
I do not limit fats as they have very little impact on insulin release, and have seen my cholesterol level fall. Some people don't - sometimes it is a reaction to cheese and other dairy products, it needs experimentation if you are one of the unlucky ones.
If you have been eating to those guidelines then just by cutting out the heavy weight carbs your Hba1c should go down quite quickly.

Hi Resurgam,

What the DN told me didn't make a lot of sense. She said i could have one slice of bread a day, but to stay away from cake, pastry, and anything that contains sugar. As you say potatoes and bread have a lot of carbs. She told me more what not to eat after I coached it out of her, and not what i could have.

By eating low carb foods my Hba1c dropped from 91 to 47 in 80 days, 44 points - I am sure that if you ignore the poor advice about bread and potatoes you should see your results fall. Humans did not evolve eating bread and potatoes, just as rabbits have never had to evolve coping mechanisms for high cholesterol.

From today im trying to cut down on bread and potatoes, but don't know what to have instead as i don't like a lot of foods that other on here like.

At the minute im on around 100 carbs per day.
