Good Afternoon,

I was diagnosed as a Type 2 on Thursday after my HbA1c came back as 65mmol/mol. I'm determined to get this under control and long term would like to get it into remission if possible.

Last year I had some good success with the Keto diet (I lost a stone) however the goal is to go into ketosis and I understand that Ketones aren't good for Type 1's. Is the keto diet safe for Type 2's?

I know it's unlikely my GP will prescribe a blood monitor but I see a number of people track their BG in order to see what foods spike their bloods etc. Can anyone recommend a good monitor with reasonable priced strips? I've seen Gluco Navii recommended by 1 or 2 people but can't really find any reviews other than amazon where the first few say it's not accurate.

Any advice will be gratefully received!

Edit to ad don't forget to register as an "official" T2 to save the VAT on your purchases.

Thank you for the advice. How do you register as an "official" type 2? My GP has put it on my records but having a look online I can't see anything obvious. I'm probably not looking in the right place!

When buying something you often have to fill out a simple form or tick a box to self declare as a diabetic.
Edit it’s a tick box with spirit health when you register but you’ll need to check that it’s actioned and if not telephone to get it registered- worth it quite a saving over time and spirit healthcare are helpful on phone if you can’t work out what to do.

Nutritional Ketones from a Keto way of eating is very different to Ketoacidosis. Ketoacidosis is typified by both high Blood Glucose and High Ketones at the same time! This is the only way that ketones are bad for Type 1 diabetics.
And yes, there are several well known Type 1's who eat a keto diet. These include Dr Richard Bernstein (of Type 1 Grit fame) in the USA and Dr Ian Lake ( of the 4 marathons in 5 days while fasting fame) in the UK.

Thank you, that's really interesting and good to know! I was getting a bit confused by the difference and was keen to go back onto Keto in order to lower my BG and lose weight. I'm glad to know I can do so and it's safe!

If you look at your online records and you should see 'Diabetes Mellitus' listed just after your diagnosis. If you can't find it then the GP may have not reported it properly - mine didn't at first. Ask him to list it as it's important to get annual retinopathy checks etc.

Thank you, I can see that they've listed that on my patient record so I'm glad they've reported it correctly!

That's good to know regarding the monitors. I wonder if some are more accurate within that +/- 15%?

I suspect the actual machines are fairly accurate but it's the conditions they have to work in.
I have two monitors - Kinetic and GlocoRX Nexus.
The Nexus came with some glucose solution to test the strips. The strips have a range to go with the solution. I've had two boxes of strips - both say they should read 6.6-8.9. First box read 7.3 second 8.2. Not surprisingly that first box read consistently lower than the Kinetic and the second consistently higher.
That together with possible contamination of the sample - it's very small (have a look at what happened to Theranos) means that the reading isn't going to be very accurate but should give an indication of spikes and reactions to food.
At 5 a 15% error will be 4.25-5.75. I think that is probably right - but within a batch of strips probably a lot less variation with a good sample.
