Earlier this year I discovered 3 separate faults with BD Microfine 8mm syringes; 2 bent needles and another with a piece of plastic in the syringe body.

A new problem has arisen with these syringes. I have found the measurement markings rubbing off, consequently the 2 syringes I put in my kit bag everyday have been losing their markings and are rendered useless. I telephoned Becton Dickinson to report the fault 2day-still awaiting a call back.

I've been using this brand of syringe for 22 yrs and am furious that the qualiity has deteriorated so badly, and that I recieve such a pathetic response each time I ring the company. They previosly told me that no-one else reported such problems which I subsequently discovered to be untrue and that a warning was sent to hospitals regarding another of their products.

I took an unused syringe out of my kit-bag 2day, it had been in their since yesterday, unused and no markings to be seen

Syringe users beware.

They do sound as the syringes are cheaply made now Jus, when I was diagnosed I would purchase the BD disposable needles occasionally to save the hassle of messing on with the glass syringes, never had a problem back then and the markings didn't erase even after been in my coat pocket for weeks on end.

I wonder if it's worth taking this up with an outside agency who investigate shooddy products, have you tried trading standards as they are pretty good to deal with?... failing that they may put you onto someone else who can investigate this problem for you.

Best wishes

Hi Nigel,
I've reported it to the MHRA medical devices team, waiting to hear back. I've never had this problem before either, and I've kept syringes in my bag for a week, so agree they're either poorly manufactured, or as Hobs suggested possibly counterfeit, hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the info Hobs. :)

Just thought I'd add that I use BD+ microfine needles for insulin pens and have noticed on at least five or six occasions that the needles have been bent / poking through the lid / broken.

I hadn't considered that it could be a problem with counterfeit products!
