Type of diabetes
Type 2
Treatment type
Tablets (oral)
i was working out and all , but on march 20 2023 ...
i developed golfers elbow from the gym ... and i havent been able to go to the gym since that time ...

since the past 10 or 15 days , i have very hard time sleeping at night ...

i only feel really sleepy around 5 in the morning ...

is this due to diabetes ?

Thanks

It is all too easy to blame diabetes for all other health problems. Maybe it's because you aren’t exercising as much as normal? If it’s really troublesome it might be worth a visit to your GP?

Thanks for the reply Rachox .

I have to change my diet to something stricter from tomorrow morning itself ...

I am going to start the breakfast with Oats and eggs in the morning ...

The rest i will figure out a bit later .

Since i am from India , i need a food that can replace rice with something else for my lunch .

For dinner some Chappathi would be better with some boiled banana , salad and vegetables ...

Thanks

Welcome to the forums @ghostrider33

Do you have a glucose testing meter? Or do you know what your latest hba1c is? Can I ask what medication you are on? And finally, are you vegetarian or vegan or have other dietary restrictions? (I'm sure the T2s here can make food suggestions, but want to make sure they are ones you can eat.)

To be honest if you are aiming to control T2 via low carb eating then chappati and boiled banana both have quite a lot of carbs, so you may need to reduce their quantity. If you test before you eat a meal and again two hours after then you should find out what affect that meal has on your body. Though there are a lot of folk here who wouldn't touch rice, chapati or banana, if you are used to a very high carb diet it may be that just a reduction in carbs will be enough. And the medication question is relevant, as you have to be careful how you reduce your carbs on certain medications. (As an extreme example, if you were on insulin then you'd probably need to reduce your insulin dose if you reduced your carbs).

Once more, welcome.

Hello EllieM ,

I just finished my breakfast ...

This time i simply ate some Oats , 1 egg omelette , A boiled banana ... And a glass of protein powder for diabetes patients ...

My plan is to completley avoid rice ....

I am going to replace the rice during lunch times too with wheat chappathi today itself ...

Sorry i almost did not see that first part of the reply ...

Yes i have an Accucheck sugar levels checking device , Last time i checked it , the reading was 111 ...

I have been using metformin for a while now ...

I am not a vegetarian ... I eat meat too ...

But i don't like to eat too much meat either ...

Thanks

Hello and welcome @ghostrider33

As a fellow type 2 there's no way I could eat what you had for breakfast and keep my levels in the normal range.

The way I keep my levels in the normal range (for the last 4 years) is to go very low carb. So for me not the oats or the banana. So for your breakfast I would suggest- more eggs, maybe some bacon or cheese or some other protein. Maybe some (a few) raspberries with wither cream or full fat greek yoghurt.

Having said that I really don't know what's available easily for you or what you like so you may not want to or be able to follow those suggestions.

In terms of replacing something for rice my best suggestion is cauliflower rice. It's actually not that difficult- google it for instructions.

As a fellow sufferer of anxiety and someone who really struggles to sleep I agree with @Rachox not every symptom is caused by diabetes, however, controlling your blood sugar levels is good for your health overall.

Good luck and welcome.

Hello VashtiB ,

I am only planning to lower it slowly ...

The best thing i could think of was cutting rice as much as possible as a first step ...

I had lunch today an hour ago and i avoided rice this time ... I ate some wheat chappathis and vegetables ... and i feel good after avoiding rice ...

I have heard of cauliflower rice ... but i have never prepared it at home before ...i will try when i get some time ...

I have started eating steamed bananas after reading this few years ago ...

Bananas contain potassium, which can help manage hypertension. One medium-sized banana contains around 422 milligrams (mg) of potassium. According to the American Heart Association (AHA) , potassium reduces the effects of sodium and alleviates tension in the walls of the blood vessels

Now i have to figure out something to eat in the evening and for dinner ...

Dinner i would probably go with chappathis again with some vegetables ...

Thanks

Bananas are sugar hand grenades, try to find an alternative. you can get more than enough Potassium from leafy green veg, cucumber, spinach, mushrooms and many more things, plus they are MUCH better for your sugar levels than bananas.

Hi - if I ate what you're eating - the oats, chapati, banana in particular - my blood glucose would be sky high. Those are all very high in carb, which when digested is converted to glucose. Removing rice is fine, but you're just replacing one source of carb with another.

Bad luck developing golfer's elbow. As a long-time user, I know metformin is more effective when you're exercising daily.

Your injured limb may be making your normal positions in bed uncomfortable. You may find you drift off to sleep more easily, once the pain subsides.

Cauliflower rice is quick and easy to make if you have a food processor. If not, the coarse side of a box grater gets the job done.

May I ask whether you steam green bananas or the riper, yellow ones? If the latter, you could reduce your carbohydrate intake, without changing your routine, by switching to green bananas.

As noted above, wheat chapatis are not diabetic-friendly. Could you live with a chapati made with gram flour (besan) instead? That too would reduce your carb intake. Every little helps.

Wishing you a steady recovery.

Is anxiety keeping you awake at night? Once your elbow improves and you can exercise normally, I'd see your GP if your insomnia persists.

Since you've been using metformin for a while and don't eat much meat, it may be worth screening your blood for vitamin B12 and folate deficiency. Metformin therapy is known to reduce intestinal absorption of these B vitamins. Low levels are thought to heighten anxiety and affect circadian rhythms, causing you to fall asleep when it's time to get up.

I am slowly recovering from it , but the recovery is a bit slow ...

it has been nearly 90 days after the pain started and there is still a little pain in the inner elbow ...

I will try to go to the gym from july , at least that is the plan ...

When i compare the quantity of chapathis eaten against rice i usually ate ... Its look like a good improvement ...

if possible i will try to change the wheat product to something else too

i must find something we can easily make at home ...

Thanks
