Does low carb have to mean low fat?

Sid,Jo was using a ULC diet to reduce her BG's BEFORE she started the newcastle study diet.

Yes Paul I was. Seems some are looking for ways to trip others up and end up tripping them selves! Seems certain posters didn't bother to read my struggles with Metformin long before I had even heard of the ND.
I remember your struggles well,It's sadly true that there does seem to be people who'll do anything to pick holes in what we post! :(

Thankfully those days are long gone and I am eating well again, but it really was a hell of a time. It could be that because it was so bad for me, doing the ND was so easy. Anyway, I am reaping the rewards now. :D

Forums are just a mish mash of different personalities Paul, I choose to ignore certain people for peace on the forum. It also keeps my blood pressure nice and low.

Hi swimmer2, would you please put your recipes for Almond Porridge and Aubergine Lasagne in the Low Carb Recipes section, thanks x

Well, both of them are stolen recipes really, but here's how they are done.

Almond Porridge

10g Porridge Oats
20g Almond Flour (this is just ground almonds - I buy mine from an asian food grocers now)
1/2 cup milk (you can use half/half water if you want to reduce the carbs further)
pinch salt (very important)
Bung it all in a saucepan and stir over a high heat for about 2 mins - keep stirring or it will stick.

Aubergine Lasagne

I don't have a recipe for this, because it's basically a normal lasagne recipe. My wife makes it half/half so one size of the dish is made with pasta/white sauce in the normal way and my side doesn't have the white sauce and has strips of Aubergine instead of pasta.
To prepare the Aubergine, cut thin slices lengthways and put them on a plate. Sprinkle generously with sea salt and leave whilst you do the sauce. Shake off the sea salt and then use in the same way as you would pasta sheets (alternating between layers of meat). Top with a ton of cheese of your choice. I do the salt thing with the Aubergine because they can be a bit mushy otherwise. It also helps to buy really nice firm and glossy Aubergines.

Hope that helps
S

Aubergine Lasagne

I don't have a recipe for this,

You could just get a recipe for Mousaka which is aubergines and minced lamb with cheese and just change the lamb mince for beef if you want but with the Greek spices Mousaka is a brilliant low carb high fat meal in its own right.

Not the recipe my wife uses but probably as good as any. http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/moussaka_6812

Sid, I had no problem checking Jo's posts and finding that she started to low carb at the same time as I did around the 6th March and started her ND the last week in April so she was low carbing for probably 6/7 weeks. loads of time to get rid of any carb cravings when you are as determined as she is.

I don't post much but I do read the forum avidly and I am having problems understanding why you post so many negative comments to anyone who openly follows the LCHF regime.

+1

Thank you Catza.

+100 Jo was there for me when I hit rock bottom in April and I hope she'll be around on this forum for a LONG time!

Seems a shame yet another thread has been derailed and killed.

There's no need to let it get derailed - this thread is in the "Low-carb diet forum" which I think is what we're discussing. There is a 'non Low carb diet forum' for those who don't believe in low carbing.

Defren,

Prior to you going on the Newcastle diet you were having trouble eating and put this down to the Metformin. I can tell you now that I was worried about you as you were not eating enough to keep a child healthy. I did p.m. someone that you admire to see if they could talk to you because what could have happened if you had carried on was that your body could have cannibalised muscle and organ tissue as it would have been running on empty.
The Newcastle adaptation that you did contained more calories than you had been eating and was a healthier alternative than what you had been doing
This is not a criticism but you need to know that lots of people were reading your progress prior to thew ND adaptation and wondering where it was all going to end. People were concerned about you.

Thank you (and others) who were concerned about me. Perhaps I should not be so transparent and keep my condition to myself rather than have people worried. I am after all a 46 year old educated woman.

As you can see it all ended very well, I am lucky to have a very caring and supportive GP many don't. I am also blessed with a very loving, caring and supportive family, again many are not.

Can I just ask that we try and keep this thread and threads like it on track. I know it's difficult, but please try and ignore those who are only interested in saying something inflammatory to make us respond.

Hi everyone, can anyone tell me how much protein and fat I am supposed to eat, I still don't think that I am eating enough fat and that that is the reason my weight is not shifting as it should, also I do fill up on protein, thanks, Deb x

Hi daideb,
Have you tried doing one of xyzzy's graphs? (if you've no idea what I mean then that'll be a no). Last time I did one I was at 13% protein, 8% carb and 79% fat and was told that the protein was a bit low. It's the carb that affects your weight, so if you can let us know what you eat in a day then we might see if we can give you the numbers.

Can I ask a question relating to the thread please?

I have been a low carb / high Fat person for nearly two years now but didn't really want to lose much weight just keep my levels low which I have been doing. I think I have been overindulging on the cheese and peanut front and now would like to lose about 10lbs. I have cut out the peanuts (for the last 2 weeks) but I don't seem to be losing any weight. I have calculated my carbs as being between 10g and 20g a day (depending on which veg I eat and I only eat them with supper). I have bought the ketone strips but have not managed to turn it even a small amount of purple. Do you think I should try only eating protein for a few days or is there another solution... I feel very well - just a tad to plump!

Any suggestions? :D

**** - have run out of lunch break - will get back to this later but I'm sure someone else will jump in..
