I am 25 type 1 and want to/need to lose a stone to have a healthy BMI. I've found that the Dukan diet does work for weight loss but am worried about the effect on my kidneys - is being in ketosis for long periods damaging to kidneys? I've kept an eye on ketone levels and they were very up and down. I tried to go for a run once and felt dizzy and sick - apparently exercising when there are ketones present is not good.
Would welcome any advice?
Thanks
Dr Boris Hansel, a metabolism and cardiovascular system specialist at the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital, in Paris, said: "The diet is not a long-term success because it does not meet our body's needs.
"There are real risks … infertility, sleep apnoea, high blood pressure, type-two diabetes, liver disease or cardiovascular problems. Following this diet is not harmless; it could cause real health problems," he told Le Parisien newspaper.
