Hey everyone,

I was just wondering what other people's experiences have been when eating eggs, especially with carbohydrates such has toast. I love poached eggs on toast as the eggs are a good source of protein, however more often than not I find when I have this for breakfast it can cause my sugars levels to go sky high. Eggs don't have any carb in them, but I have the read the combination with bread can cause it to take longer for your body to process and due to the length of time it's in your system, keeps your blood sugar levels higher.

Has anyone else come across this issue? Would love to know your thoughts.

Rob :)

If it is eggs on toast for breakfast are you sure it is not the dreaded dawn phenomenon shooting your blood sugars up , and of course it depends on what type of bread you're using white being the worst for that .

Hi Jay,

Definitely not the dawn phenomenon as it doesn't usually happen with anything else I have for breakfast and not white bread either as I know how bad that can be. Just something I noticed quite often when I have eggs on toast.

Sorry, at the risk of cross-posting bread would send my blood sugars high. Unless it’s a ‘low carb’ bread the flour in breads is a carbohydrate . A typical thin slice of bread contains around 15g, a thicker slice around 20g . It matters not whether it’s white bread or whole-wheat.

Back before I got 'fat-adapted' meaning I still ate breakfast, I used to eat boiled eggs, 2 or 3 of them - just the eggs which either had no effect on my BG or on occasion when I was getting some DP they stopped it in its tracks so my BG started to drop.

Some type 1s find they need to dose for the protein they eat, which can have an effect on some people’s blood sugar. Don’t ask me how. You might need to discuss with a diabetes specialist nurse or dietician.

As you say, eggs have no carbohydrate content. I would suggest that the impact on your blood glucose is solely due to the bread you're eating, which is 60-70% carb.

I'd expect anyone, diabetic or not, to show a rise in BG after eating bread, it's natural and to be expected. But it's nothing to do with the eggs.
