Aw Kelly, I really feel your pain. I have been diabetic for nearly 20 years and I still find it a massive struggle to control.

I too like you struggle to lose weight. The way I explain it is if I eat like a 'normal' person and healthily at that, I still gain weight, I feel like in order for me to try to lose weight I practically have to starve myself! and even then the scales hardly budge.

I have been trying to do low carb high fat but again the weight isn't shifting and I find it soooooo restrictive. The only good thing about it is that my sugars stabilise the best they have ever been since being diabetic.

However, I amd sick and tired of eggs for breakfast so thought I would maybe just have a few more carbs and introduce a mullerlight light today (12g) and my sugars went mental!

I wish there was a fix all for it but I just don't see where there is. I really hope you manage to get things sorted but at least you can come here and vent on here and we all understand.

And..if you do find something that works them please let me know xxx

Hi Kelly

I have been T1 since January 2012 and the weight keeps piling on :( I am on 20 units Lantus a day and take 4 units Novorapid with meals. I am 5' 3" tall and my weight is up to 13 stone which is heavier than I have ever been in my life! I was 11 stone when diagnosed but that was a stone heavier than normal because I gave up smoking in 2009. My GP referred me to a dietician but they eventually said that they could not come up with anything that would help me. I eat far less now than I ever did but never lose any weight. Guess I am just going be overweight for the rest of my days.

.you can lose weight and take your insulin, are you on a 2 pen basal bolus? a mixed insulin ?

I'm T2 but would start with basal check
http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/info/?page_id=120
http://www.salforddiabetescare.co.uk/index2.php?nav_id=1007

can you do this for a month and see the result.? use a food counter and double check the carbs, half are wrong on them, but as a T1 you may have found that out already.
roughly, don't get OCD on it :)
30g carb a day from veg and salad / 120cal
60g protein / 240 cal
rest from healthy fats and oils 150g / 1350 cal. for energy
total ~1700 cal [you may be eating less than this now, but try it]

a long page and a few good video’s

atkins induction diet has a lot of recepies

Eating far less does not mean that you are eating the right foods and also exercise is also important. Even if uts a 30 min walk each day.
Some people say some insulins cause weight gain. I've never found this in 30 years.
Try using myfitnesspal and see if a days food and activities are enough...
Some people find lower carbibg is good for weight loss. However as a T1 you must be confident at changing the doses of insulin and blood testing 2 hours after meals as well as reducing the carbs will impact on both basal and bolus insulins...

Don't give up. List a typical days foods here and people will come along with good ideas of how to lose weight.

The trouble with NHS diietitians is that they tell people to shovel carbs down their throats at every meal time and for snacks... And even as a T1 this is not necessary if you know and are confident with adjusting your doses...

Oh and buy a smaller plate!! Standard ones in shops, especially the eat well plates are huge compared to even 30 years ago. I'm 50+ and only ate off small plates..typically the size of a side plate nowadays.

Kelly you need insulin to keep yourself going for the future of your daughter.....

I'm attaching photos of food that my anorexic younger friend is now making for herself... She absolutely was killing herself..now with a lot of help she is gradually starting to enjoy food... And being the arty girlie she is...making food good enough for 5* restaurants...

However, you are eating barely the minimum to survive.. And honestly.. I have to ask you.. (Sorry) why do you see stopping your insulin as helping you???

Please ensure you see the psychologist.

To be honest.. I have slow colic transit. If I don't "poo". I can put 5lb on in 2 days.... Are you regularly going to loo?

To me your body is in starvation mode snd hanging on to every calorie it possibly can because your diet is lacking good fats...

The food in photos from my "anorexic recovering friend" shows that she is eating bslanced healthy fat in her food.. You aren't having any... I lacked it for most of my life too!! Healthy fat and enough calories are so important....

Hey Kelly...i hear you and i know exactly how you feel. I am Type 2 and i have pcos so i have always struggled with my weight but i was always happy where i was...then i was put on insulin about 2 years ago and i have put on 4 stone...i feel so down and depressed about it..and no one really understands how you feel. I buried my head in the sand and i really regret it now because i carried on eating like i wasnt really diabetic and now i have problems with my eyes.

I have been on a low carb diet for almost four weeks and my sugar levels have come right down and i have finally managed to lose half a stone (7lbs).
I have even managed to lower my insulin too.

I recently broke down with my diabetic nurse and said i feel like coming off the insulin altogether so she has referred me to a specialist team with a doctor and dietician to discuss about going on a new drug which helps with weight loss with insulin.

By the way...you look fab on your pic...please dont feel like you are alone and i have found on here you get some great advice and help. :)

Hey m786xxx....I am currently following The Body Rescue Plan by Christianne Wolff...i did post a link on another thread but it got taken down...but you can google search.
It is a 12 week healthy living plan with diet and exercise.
The first week is a detox...NO wheat, gluten, dairy, alcohol, sugar or processed foods. The only carbs you are allowed are sweet potatoes and other veg and fruits.
Then each week you can slowly add a little something back into your diet, like more coconut oil, olives, small amount of carbs such as pasta or brown rice or cous cous etc and that kind of thing.
All food is cooked in coconut oil...i use the spray kind and a good non stick pan.

I dont eat any wheat or gluten now and i have to say i feel so much better health wise. I used to suffer awfully with tummy upsets and i havnt had any since i stopped eating bread or cereals etc anymore.
I do miss a good granary bread sarnie at times tho lol.

I eat wheat and gluten free pasta and even tho it is more expensive i think its totally worth it for how i am feeling these days.
A typical day diet is as follows:
Breakfast: 2 egg omelette with mushrooms or any veg of your choice. Boiled egg with asparagus soldiers.
Dinner: Chicken/Salmon/Prawn salad. Fruit.
Tea : Sweet potato chips with a chicken breast cooked in silver foil with slices of lemon and spices, served with veg. Salmon and broccoli wheat free/gluten free pasta. Fruit
Snacks: a few cashew nuts and almonds.

I have recently watched a video about diabetes on another thread and a doctor said that low carb but high fat is good for diabetics but i do worry about cholesterol levels. So i am a little confused as to what i am meant to be eating...but for now this diet and exercise plan seems to be slowly working.

I do not know the name of this new drug yet as my diabetic nurse advised that as its fairly new out she isnt allowed to prescribe it to me and so i have been referred to a specialist diabetic team to see a doctor there and a dietician and then they will decide if this drug will be good for me.
I will of course keep u posted.
I am kinda hoping its a miracle cure but i do live in the real world lol.:)

Hi! Trust me, you're not alone. I thought I was the only one until I found this discussion, so thank you! It is really hard. I have been a diabetic for just over two years, and my blood sugars have recently been a little chaotic, but are starting to come back under control, however, I am eating when I don't want to eat because I have to, and then eating again for normal meals. I find myself getting into habits and little eating rituals, which is resulting in me gaining some weight. It's at a pretty tricky time for me, as I am a student and the peer pressures of teenage life to be the "right size" can be hard, but I'm starting to try a low carb diet again and do more exercise. It can be depressing, especially when you try so hard, but my dad told me,

"When you are trying your very best
And your rewards are few.
Remember that the mighty oak,
Was once a nut like you"

No I don't think so. Your body is adjusting now to normal functioning. Stick to it and all will get back to normal soon. As for the weight gain I suppose it will happen now (at least a bit). If you haven't taken your insulin for months I suppose youre underweight now. Few more pounds is really not a big price for feeling and looking healthy. Good luck :)
