Feedback From My Gp And Dn Appointments This Week.

he passed me a cup which said ' please do not confuse your Google with my medical degree'.

When it comes to chronic metabolic issues, Dr Google is really going to make them redundant... and they would have no idea why...

Brilliant. For me it was a massive step in the right direction. From little seeds acorns grow.

I 'infiltrated ' and as a result was invited to the xmas PPG lunch with 3 x Drs. One was very interested in what I had to say (no escaping, xmas lunch or not he was going to get it!!!). He is now referring diabetics to me for a chat. Only just had my first referral but it felt amazing. Dr understood exactly what lchf was about too. And the practice manager has been amazing. Got a room sorted for me to give my first talk on my journey. Was more successful than I thought it was going to be. Thought I might be talking to myself! 12 people there. Surgery want a date from me for my next one. I feel I do have a very supportive surgery (although not all Drs are as enthusiastic as you can see by the post above about my Dr thrusting his 'don't confuse your Google with my medical degree - trivialities like that wont stop me Haha). Yes joining my PPG was definitely a great move. I'm going to a big meeting on 21st March. Many high profile members of NHS there. I'm excited!!! Its an all day event. I will report back. Still plugging away on the PR front too. As are many forum members. Every time you open a newspaper, magazine or listen to the radio we are there (I can dream). We are definitely getting it out there at every opportunity. Its building momentum for sure. Good luck. Let us know how you get on.
You have proven that your contribution makes a difference. I hope my contribution has at least half the success that yours has.

It will have. I've been very surprised at how much of an impact me just telling about my journey (at every opportunity!) Has had.

If any GP gets stuck in the mud sometimes one has to take a wide berth around them.
Only they can free themselves.
The mug title i would suggest as a gift is " The mind is like a parachute ...")
The remainder of the saying is-" it only works when open".

If your surgery are behind low carb way of controlling blood sugars we are on another winner!.

This is something I am not yet clear on. And there are two surgeries involved here, just a few hundred metres apart yet acting separately but both wanting to go down the line of :

Patients helping patients
Empowering people in the community
Social prescribing

...but haven’t quite got there yet when it comes to T2 diabetes and reversal. I sense there is mixed opinion amongst them but have yet to get to the bottom of it. Getting them to act in unison on a low carb way of controlling blood sugars is the challenge. I have pinged them so much stuff including all that material you sent me and am hoping it will help to accelerate the use of the low carb program across the board at the two practices.

One thing is for sure, attention was definitely grabbed on what is going on at the surgery in your area. I am hoping that might be the key to the door for us in our area, just north of the Ribble.

I actually spent a day in Southport a few weeks ago. As we drove down that way it is still possible to see the tower across the Ribble all the way in. The geographical distances between these places is quite small. And we sit between the two.

Dr unwin is in southport and driving it forward magnificently.

The NHS guidelines haven't changed. Eatwell plate encouraged in the first instance to type 2s, and when you think how that amount of carbs can affect our blood sugars its shocking. No wonder they follow that with 'its progressive'. That said low carb app approved for drs to prescribe which a leap in the right direction.

This is why I want to do a leaflet. To run alongside the existing advice. I cant tread on anyone's toes now that I'm in primary care. So leaflet will say something like 'an alternative approach to controlling blood sugars' or something to that effect.

They certainly don't recommend bs testing every day, several times a day, which to me is the only way to find out what works and what doesnt.

Work in progress.

I am looking forward to that leaflet. Can I tell them you are compiling one?

Last week the subject of leaflets came up in the context of self care and care in the community.

My practice manager is very keen to support the following which really helps, mention to your PM:

Patients helping patients
Empowering people in community
Social prescribing
Practice Manager. You have me thinking there. The one person not at the last PPG meeting. I shall try and establish contact with her.

No not yet, im not even sure what format it will be in, no idea of contents, how much to include etc. Just a very rough idea. Particularly busy for the next 2 weeks then i will have time. Son and daughter will help me design. I will show forum members first, see what they think then if they give it the thumbs up i will forward to my surgery to see if they can use it. Then we can take it from there. Fingers crossed they might use it.

Okay. Our lot here have a lot to be going on with. 2nd PPG meeting tomorrow at the other surgery this time.

Our local practices operate a Health Champion scheme for many chronic conditions. I am one for T2D and run a support group where we exchange recipes(often sharing samples) talk about how we’re doing and encourage each other. We are going to put together a recipe book and invite local cafe owners to the launch to encourage them to offer low carb options in their establishments. Perhaps you could ask if a Health champion network is running where you are and ask if not, why not? Good luck.

@Debandez

After I deluged our local NHS surgeries with that material you sent me, I received an email attached to an email on dealing wit T2 diabetes in another region entirely. This came about via respective twitter accounts. So, our local NHS representation are now engaging with a Surgery in Newcastle on dealing with T2 diabetes and patients helping patients type care, social prescribing etc. Joining up the dots. Fantastic.

I liked this line in her email from the Gateshead GP, that I read today:

“SO it might not be anything like you are hoping to achieve, but my take home message was - if you're doing something for the benefit of patients, forget your own pre-conceptions and let them decide, and then it WILL work, because they know way better than we do!! (I don't mean that in a patronising way, just that was my main learning point from it all!!)”

Its diabetes week 10 june, wonder what they planned. Would love to know.
Sadly. Not much as far as I can tell. I did throw a question about the event into the pot. It was noted, something may happen but remains to be seen.
