First time tester(SD)Code Free)

Good morning all my friends I have just tested my first early morning fasting meter test and it reads 5 is this OK,Thank you

Sounds good to me, there are some people on here that would give a lot to have a fasting bg like that. Now the task is to monitor 2 hours after eating and to keep it less than 2 more.

Good morning all my friends 8.45am just had breakfast 75g of porridge(carbs 9g and 40g blueberries 4 carbs will test again in 2 hours:)

Total carbs 13g

Good morning just taken my 2 hour test since breakfast and it reads 5.2

Those readings are what non-diabetics would achieve. Well done. Hopefully your test results, when you get them, will be good. I do find the waiting hard for results.

Good afternoon @azure and @Hiitsme my friends yes thank you but it is early days and I am waiting for my assestment blood results so I am being very cautious and I am down to 66 kilos from 74 kilos and from a 38 waist to 36 which is worrying me,if anyone else in Tescos says oh you have lost weight are youOk,I shall punch them on the nose(only joking) enjoy your day my friend;):)

ps Just had lunch 2 hecks sausages.6 brussels/half a tin of tomatoes/small portion of of mushrooms and half a small glass of sugar free very weak diluted orange/7/8ths water

How do you get 9 grams of carbs from 75g porridge! Ignoring the soluable fibre 50% of the oats is carbs so that is 38g. If I also ignore 50% as resistant starches that is 19g (I am being generous and this depends on the how the oats are produced). Then we have the blueberries and also did you use milk or water. If you made it with milk you need to account for the carbs in the milk which are not insubstantial. So as you see you are having anything from 25g carbs to nearly 50g. That isnt a problem unless your meter says so but just so you recognise that.

Good morning @andcol I haven't got a clue but it works for me:)

Thats what my book tells me and sources on the web ,don't forget I am relativey new to all this so if I have made a mistake for that I apologise,I shall check ot out,if I can understand it,enjoy your day my friend:)

Just to add to the discussion on porridge and carbs, this is from the book Carbs & Cals

75g porridge made with skimmed milk
11g carbs, 4g protein, 2g fat, 1g fibre

75g porridge made with water
6g carbs, 1g protein, 1g fat, 1g fibre.

@wiseowl_123 This book is invaluable for learning how many carbs in thousands of ordinary foods. It is available from Amazon and is also produced as an app. I bought my copy 3 years ago and still use it.

You seem to be doing very well with your levels. :)

You are doing really well so you do not need to worry just keep doing what you are already because it is working

was it 75g when cooked or 75g of raw oats? To reiterate what pinkorchid says the meter says the porridge is fine for you

Those readings are brilliant so whatever you are eating is fine for you. Just keep doing what you are doing and I am looking forward to seeing your results.

Good mornig @Hiitsme @andcol @Pinkorchid @Bluetit1802 and many thanks for all your support and friendship it is very much appreciated my friends:)

I took a reading 2 hours after the porridge episode and it read 8.5 also took a reading 2 hours aafter that and it read 4.5.dont know what this is telling me,I am confused

OK when you eat your glucose rises to its peak generally anywhere from 30 to 90 mins and then starts to come down. The peak generally gets extended and slowed depending on fat content and soluble fibre intake.

Being at 8.5 mmol/l at 2 hours is at the top of the OK range. I would suggest tomorrow you try to reduce the quantity slightly until you are under 8 or remove the blueberries. You still havent said how you made the porridge: milk - semi-skimmed or full fat or water etc if you use ful fat milk and not semi-skimmed or skimmed the fat in the milk will flatten the peak

It is telling you that your levels were a bit too high at 2 hours and had returned to normal at 4 hours. It is also worth noting that the 8.5 may not have been your peak. It is likely you peaked earlier than 2 hours, and were on your way down. Next time try testing at 1 hour and again at 90 minutes. It is all trial and error, but recording these levels alongside a food diary that includes portion sizes will help you see the patterns and trends.

I aim to be under 7 at 2 hours and under 6 half an hour after that. You can set your own targets.
