Greetings. Apparently im in Prediabetes range. With a cgm for a while i realise i might be getting hypos at
Night. I realise that I’ve been cutting down carbs is something that you’re generally advised to do but realise that I’ve lost quite a bit of weight and muscle. I know that I need to be having carbs any advice from anybody about putting on weight safely?

Hello @Joyce64 , and welcome,

Hypo's, when you're on no medication that drives your blood glucose down (Like gliclazide or insulin), and no other condition in the mix that causes hypo's like RH, aren't usually a safety risk: your liver should dump glucose into your system if you go low, we have our own failsafe built in that way. As you mentioned the hypo's are being read on your CGM at night, there's a chance they're not really hypo's, but what's called a "compression low". If you lie on the doodad, it doesn't read right and gives a hypo alarm, so you might want to check against a finger prick to see whether you're actually low, or the CGM is just malfunctioning due to being lain upon. (For instance, I was supposedly having hypo's at around 2.0 mmol/l, when I was a 7.0 mmol.... Go figure, big difference!)

Upping carbs would put weight back on, but would also raise your blood glucose levels again. So you likely want to avoid that, is my guess? Instead, up the (healthy) fats and proteins, so your body still has something to burn for fuel and build up muscles with. Because as a lot of people here will say, you don't actually need carbs... You literally can follow a zero carb diet and live solely on proteins and fats, but you do need both of those, not just one of them.

Dunno if this helps at all, as it's not quite what you were asking, but just some things to consider, I guess.

Good luck!
Jo

I found that following a high carb low fat diet made me lose muscle and I had to give up work for a while, but once I was diagnosed and eating protein and fats my strength has improved - after all muscle is meat, and carbs are not essential - they are stored as fat and that is something I really do not want more of.
The low readings in the night might be simply lying on the sensor.

It is unusual to lose muscle mass on a LCHF way of eating unless you are vegetarian/vegan or also cutting down on calories, which isn't required for T2D remission or for weight loss or for reducing Blood Pressure.
LCHF is more accurately called Low Carb High Protein Highish Fat provided that no additional fat is added, so that the fat is either attached to protein (Meat, Fish, Eggs, Cheese, Cream etc.) or moderate amounts from salad dressing and cooking.
