I am a realist I think. Some of what you read is right, some is wrong, some is just a different point of view. Some people are honest, some are liars. Some people are genuine, some are fake.

I think in anything to do with the internet you have to use your judgement and keep a degree of scepticism. You don't actually know the people at the end of the keyboards, so it isn't cynicism to be wary - it's self-preservation! It's when people become emotionally-involved and sometimes emotionally-dependent on people they don't know that the damage starts.

Andy....

"Troll"
One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument.
......................................................................
There is one answer that stops a troll dead in its ("its".... used intentionally) track, but it takes everyone to follow suit.

The best answer to a Troll.... is No Answer.
Works 100% every time, providing everyone can contain themselves.

Absolutely correct, which is why that I will not respond to one particular, highly dubious yet inexplicably popular thread on this forum!

Dictators who positively go out of their way to force misery, tears and fears, upon their countryman's lives.
Politicians who, in dealing with dictators, have a wishbone where a backbone should be.
Beachbag, through personal experience I never now believe any advert until it can
be proven reasonably true. Unfortunately that's easier said than done at times.
At best, we have to take our chances despite perhaps, receiving positive recommendations.

As far as politicians are concerned, I get the impression they do not do things in the interest of the country.
The various political parties appear to point score against each others new dreamed up new policies even
if those new policy proposals are kosher.

I also get the impression the majority of politicians are egotistical, backstabbing, and criminal
fibbers of the highest order who have one rule for themselves and one rule for those they govern.

Ooooo, that's made me feel better, thank you for the opportunity to get that off my chest. :joyful:

Good thread, incidentally.

willie. :)

Fresh from my Butter thread, a follow on thought...... My work colleagues used to say I always thought the best of people, always gave everyone the benefit of the doubt, even when evidence indicated otherwise, so I guess I was a bit of a soft touch, gullible? I'm getting on now and with age has come cynicism,... Is that better?
How much of what you come across through adverts, research etc, even what you read online, do you believe?
Gotta go doggie walking now, so back later to read how many cynics there are here, lol
During recent years - I have become more cynical and less trusting. Also try not to let this show on my face when I am being bull-shitted, much better to let "them" think that they have one over on me and then discover later that the reverse is true. Poker player face is,very useful.

I am much more cynical now than when I was younger. The more people you meet who turn out to be other than they appear and the more experiences in life where you realise you are being hoodwinked take their toll. I do try to keep a balance of a healthy cynicism and an open mind.

What really annoys me with adverts is the use of deliberately misleading terms, which could mean the opposite of their face value, for example:
"Specially Selected" gives the impression of having chosen the best, but can simply mean: "we picked out all the rotten ones and these are the rejects".
"Quality item" suggest high quality, but could just as easily mean LOW quality.
"Lasts up to twice as long"... suggests item is twice as good, but in fact only promises NOT to last twice as long; in fact it may not last any longer at all!

Try not to be cynical, but tend to fail miserably in most instances.
Perhaps I'm cynical in order to avoid disappointment? I really admire people who always think the best of others, but I still want to live in a lighthouse!

I was guilty of being gullible by heeding the diet advice when diagnosed, I'm more of a cynic nowadays especially when it comes down to my health:happy:

I'm a cynic - I don't know whether I was made this way, or whether I grew this way. But I have a tendency to take everything with a pinch of salt unless good hard evidence is presented in front of me in black and white, even then I'm dubious!

I couldn't bring myself to comment on the "totally implausible thread" either. I thought it was just me being a heartless b**** lol.

I was brought up to think the best of everyone and if I didn't have a good word to say about someone/something then not to say anything at all. As I have aged this has become more and more difficult and its only in the last year that I have had to admit that some Doctors/HCP's tell downright LIES, suffice to say I attended a medical with ATOS to come to that conclusion, but it still SHOCKED me. :spitoutdummy:

On the other hand, I have met many people online who appear to have an open and honest approach and I give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe still being gullible !!! :(;)
