Hello all,

Guess I should have introduced myself long before now, but was only prompted by reading the introduction from Allybee :) I have been lurking around in here for a few months now, picking up tips and recipes!

I look forward to getting some good information from this forum, considering I ain't got much to work with out here. I was only diagnosed a few months ago when in the UK on holiday, but it certainly explained a lot of what has been happening to me over the last few years. I have gone from living in Indonesia, then Russia and I am now in Angola, so don't get much time at home to take care of this disease properly.

Biggest issue I have right now is with the amount of conflicting advice out there. I tried to follow some advice in here suggesting that removal of carbohydrates from the diet would be good, and it did make me feel good ...eventually. But then when I received some information from my GP back in the UK (like a starter pack for newly diagnosed diabetics), it seemed to contradict that advice! Who is right and who is wrong? Or are there many different approaches to dealing with this disease?

I am originally from Johnstone and a die-hard Tim, so I guess I can look forward to some banter as well :)

Take care everyone ...its a sugar coated jungle out there!

Colin.

Hi Colin - you're right. There IS a lot of conflicting info out there. Unfortunately, nobody can tell you what will work for you - it's all trial and error. You'll just have to do as much research as you can, and don't believe a word anyone tells you until you have tried it yourself and are able to confirm the results based on your own level of diabetic control.

One thing everyone agrees on, though, is that sugar is bad. Avoid all types of sugar (Lactose/glucose/sucralose - pretty much anything that ends on "ose" is a type of sugar).

Good luck - and ASK LOTS OF QUESTIONS!

Hail! ColinBhoy.

You will definitely get conflicting advice re. your diet and diabetes and you certainly aren't alone in that. Have a read through the Success Stories thread and see what you think.
We can guarantee you some banter at lthe very east.

C'mon the leather belts!

That's as good a place to start as any.

What is almost inevitable if you read almost any diabetes forum or newsgroup is that the Standard Diet causes rapid disintegration whereas eating within your insulin envelope can greatly slow or even stop the progression and reverse many symptoms. Since your doctor has probably never seen this happen he doesn't believe it is possible.

Fortunately a small but increasing number of doctors and even dieticians are now coming on board.

LOL Colin

Your posting title and forum name is about as subtle as a failing pancreas!

Welcome though. The old diabolical is murder polis but keep reading and you will find what suits you. I started cutting carbs down after diagnosis and havent keeled over yet so dont be worried about looking at your diet as recommended. There is a school of thought thinks that you can eat what you like as long as you have medication to cover it but to be honest I personally couldnt eat what i used to. I considered myself to be a very healthy eater and I was, but the diet i followed isnt great for diabetes. Its not until you start looking carefully at your diet you realise that it is sugar coated jungle out there! Just remember sugar is the most simple form of carbohydrate and all carbohydrates turn to sugar - some slower than others, but THEY all do it. So a bit of wholemeal toast might not seem as bad as two sugars in your tea - but both will affect your blood sugar.

I used to eat millions of wholemeal pasta , with nice healthy sauces but when i actually looked at the carbs, I probably ate a persons worth in one sitting

So good luck. Ask away if you need to
